The EBSCO DATABASES at Kwantlen University College Library are a group of international and scholarly indexes that include primarily journals (including peerreviewed journals), books, magazine and newspaper articles, and reports. EBSCO Databases supply a full citation and abstract for each entry; with full-text links for many articles. This Quick Guide is intended to help get you started using the Web versions of our EBSCO DATABASES, available as on-line subscriptions, through the Kwantlen Library Home Page.
►The online databases are listed AZ. Click on the letter that corresponds with your database selection. For this example click on the letter “A”

Using the Database
You will be starting in the Advanced Search mode. If you are sure about the term(s) you wish to use, begin by entering them in the Find: box. To find articles on global warming and fossil fuels your search would look like this:

Scroll down and look at all the options for limiting and expanding your search results. Apply as appropriate for your topic. ► Remote Access: When accessing most databases from off campus, you will be prompted to type in your username and password to authenticate you as a Kwantlen user. For Students: username = student number password = same password used to register for classes online For Faculty: username = banner number password = same password used to login to office computers or access HR self services For Administrators & Staff username = same name id used to access office computers password = same password used to access office computers
Successful Search Strategies
In general, it is not a good idea to use sentences or long phrases in your search statement. Rather than a statement such as “the effects of energy consumption on global warming”, you should create a statement that combines separate terms or concepts using the connecting words AND, OR, and NOT, which are known as *Boolean operators: AND OR NOT narrows a search by requiring that all terms be present global warming and energy consumption expands a search by allowing either term to be present teenagers or adolescents allows you to search for one term, but eliminates all citations with another term penguins not Pittsburgh

An Individual Article Citation
Take a look at all the information provided on the detailed results screen. Title, author, source/journal name and subject terms are followed by the abstract.

Subject Heading / Thesaurus Search
Use the Subject Terms, Subjects or Thesaurus search to ensure you are using the most up-to-date and precise term possible.

Cited References
Click on the Cited References button at the top of the screen to find out how often a specific author and/or title have been cited in the literature.
For example, to find out how often the 2001 article “Defining identification: A Theoretical look at the identification of audiences with media characters” by J. Cohen has been cited do the following:

1. Type your search terms in the appropriate boxes.
3. Mark the checkbox and click on ► Find Citing Articles. All articles that cite this article in this database will be retrieved.

Images
A search for historical photos of Vancouver would look like this:
1. Type your keywords in the Find: box.
Click on the Images link at the top of the screen to access images on a variety of topics. ▼

Business Source Premier Company Profiles
Use the Business Source Premier Company Profiles search to find information on the companies you are researching.
1. Click on the Company Profiles link at the top of the screen, then 2. Type the company’s name ► (Bombardier) in the Browse for: box. 3. Click on the Browse button ▼
Click on the company’s name to ► retrieve more detailed information including the Datamonitor Report.

MLA Names as Subjects
Click on the Names as Subjects link at the top of the screen to search for articles about a specific author.
For example, to find articles about D. H. Lawrence do the following:
▼1. Type the author’s name in the Browse for box.
◄ 2. On the next screen, ◄ mark the checkbox and click on Search.

Emailing, Exporting, Saving & Printing
Selecting articles to email, export, save or print:
1. 2. From the result list, select the articles you want to email, save, or print by clicking on the ADD link or folder icon on the right hand of the Results screen . Click on the Folder has items hyperlink at the top of the screen. From an open article, click Print, E-mail, Export or Save. If you have already marked some articles, including the open article, the database will assume that you want the open article only. To print, e-mail or save all marked articles always click on the folder icon to proceed with your work.
Emailing your results
1. 2. 3. 4. Once you click E-mail, the E-mail Manager window appears. Enter your full email address in the appropriate box (for example, jane.smith@kwantlen.net). Enter a subject to appear in the email subject line (for example, climate articles). Choose the desired format , then click Send. A message appears when your email has been sent.
Exporting your results
1. 2. Once you click Export, the Export Manager window appears. Choose the desired format, then click the email or save button.
Saving your results
1. 2. 3. 4. Once you click Save, the Save Manager window appears. Click Save. Insert your saving device. From your browser menu, click File Save As. Click Save.
Printing your results
Pay printing is available in the Library. 1. 2. 3. Once you click Print, the Print Manager window appears. Click Print. The print delivery window appears, noting the estimated number of pages. Choose the desired format, then click on the Print button. To print, click the print icon on your browser toolbar (or click File Print).
