MINUTES OF THE FEB 12 TH, MEETING
COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISSION OF GOSHEN
City Hall, 202 Sth 5th St, 6:30 p.m.

1. Opening: Meeting called to order at 6:30. Dixie Robinson was introduced, as the new
commissioner. Miguel requested that a brief CRC history and what CRC stands for, be
given by Sreekala, and all commissioners give a reason as to why they joined CRC. It
was clarified by Chic and Sreekala that CRC is not the police for the residents, but we
try to promote fairness, be humane, and educate acceptance of different cultures.
2. The agenda was adopted.
3. Notes of the January 8 th meeting were taken by George, since only George & Sreekala
were present at the meeting (along with Justin).
4. Updates: Treasurer’s report: was presented by Sreekala. Balance of $26,105.82 in
Complaints:: 0. Sreekala suggested that perhaps residents are not comfortable calling
the CRC number due to the present situation with documented and undocumented
Intervention: Sreekala suggested that the CRC brochure be updated. Since there was
no quorum, it was suggested by those members present, that a discussion could take
place by email. Sreekala wanted help to take the boards to the Housing Authority and
Tom Byers, Administrator at the Elkhart County Commissioners Building.
Diversity Day: Sreekala distributed 3 donor letters to each of the members suggesting
that they give it out to those who they knew for donation, or donate themselves.
Sreekala said that 400-450 letters for donations were sent out by the Diversity Day
Committee, as in past years, it brings in only $2,000.00-$3,000.00 as donations, but
monies have been carried over from previous years, making present Diversity Day
donations around $7,000.00. Also announced that May 3 rd would be Diversity Day. The
theme being “Keeping Goshen Beautiful” beautiful for the residents and the
5. A report was given by Miguel about the present status of Driver’s License as being
worked on by the Immigration Task Force in Goshen, which Miguel co-chairs with
Marilyn Torres. A report was given on the incident with Araceli Lepe’s husband
Herberto Moreno, a Hispanic American citizen who was followed by a State Police
Officer for 7-8 miles, and then told he was speeding, jailed him saying he was illegal,
because Herberto’s nervousness made him give his social security # incorrectly. The
police officer would not listen to his pleas to contact someone else, or to see his papers.
6. Report on “Intercultural Resource Networking Project”: A plan outline to enhance
Was presented by Darin Short. The plan was to:
A. Prioritize Available opportunities and set targets for implementation or
completion: dealt with
B. Education, to create or become a coordinating body, create an intercultural
C. Hire a paid staff to work alongside with CRC, create a minority leaders council,
co ordinate existing groups to provide increased access and learning from each
other, create a mediation program, create a welcome wagon, challenge existing
boards of community to become more diverse, challenge key resources and
other organizations to create diversity committees. Work to meet specific needs
of specific cultures. Foster desired connections among resource network
D. Identify a team of key stakeholders. Had a list of the stakeholders, including
CRC. Goals to
E. Improve the image of Goshen as a community. Have objectives by assessing the
different organizations. Have desired outcomes that are the identifiable markers
that the plan has been successful.
F. Design a more detailed and comprehensive plan based on the above plans.
G. Determine specific groups and individuals for assessment: Requires funding.
H. RFP for education and training:: Requires funding.
I. Initiate education and training.
7. New Business/Concern/Announcements. Sreekala announced the need for getting 2
more commissioners, names to be given to the Mayor. Sreekala said that the
nominating committee has to work on the names for new officers. Announcement was
made that the meeting at the Goshen Theater hosted by the Apan Community and the
Immigration Task Force was cancelled due to the bad weather.
