					                    Organelle Function Project
We have done a lot of work with cell organelles thus far in class; lot’s of notes,

worksheets and reading! Isn’t it amazing that we have these non-living entities making

our cells work correctly? I think so, and I want to give you the opportunity to further

explore the exciting secret life of cells.

Your task is to come up with a creative way to tell the world (well, at least the Red

team) about this amazing world inside every cell on the planet.

You can do this in the following ways:

o Write a poem about organelles and their functions and recite it to the class

o Write a children’s storybook with illustrations about all of the organelles and

       their functions

o Create a comic strip about organelles and their functions

o Create a 3D model of a cell with a key that describes the function of the

       organelles

o Create a brochure for vacationing in the cell and what “sights” (organelles) you

will see on the way and what you could do there

o Create a movie or a podcast about the cell that describes the function of the

       organelles

o Design a blueprint for a “cell city” with an explanation of the functions of each

part of the “city” and what they represent

o Create an edible cell with a non-edible diagram that explains organelle functions

o Compose a song about organelles and perform it for the class

o Publish a newsletter about some stories from a fictional “cell city”

You are not limited to these options. If you can think of something else you would like

to do to show your knowledge of the cell, come talk to me.
                                Requirements:
   1. All projects must be approved by Mr. Lynch. See the proposal sheet for details

       on approval.

   2. Proposals are due by ________________________________________

   3. All projects will be required to have a bibliography of the sources that you

utilized. I will provide a list of resources that you can start with. You may use

other resources, but please check with me first.

   4. You must include the following organelles in your project:

                                                                             Endoplasmic
Nucleus Nucleolus Ribosomes Chromatin
                                                                             Reticulum
Cell (Plasma) Cell Wall (for Chloroplasts
Golgi Body Mitochondria
                  Membrane plant cells) (plant cells)
Lysosomes BONUS: BONUS:
                  Vacuole(s) Cytoplasm
(Animal cells) Cytoskeleton Centriole

   5. As we have seen in class, the inner life of a cell is a lot like the functioning of a

small city or factory. For example, just like the city needs a power plant to

provide its citizens with electricity, the mitochondria provides the cell with

copious amounts of energy (ATP). You are required to use at least 4 analogies

in your project to explain the function of the organelle.

   6. These projects will be due on ____________________________ and you will be

required to present your cell to the class during “Operation: Organelle”
To help you get started, here is an organizer that will help you gather information that

will help you describe the the various organelles. These can be photocopied or copied

into a notebook.
