6:30 pm – Meeting started

   1. Financial Report

Craig Olson presented the budget. Zach Upton was first to point out that we have not
taken advantage of the student participation reimbursement available from the National
Chapter. Juan said that he and Natalia have tried unsuccessfully to lure students to get
involved. Juan pointed out that there are ASA student chapters at about six universities
and he has tried to get a student chapter started at UMD, but has not been successful. Jeff
Dunne questioned if we have tried to contact the existing student chapters to get a
perspective as to why they are successful in drawing participation. Zach Upton suggested
that the problem is that acoustics tends to be spread out over a number of departments.
Peter Manhken’s experience with IEEE student chapters is that companies get involved.
Natalia Sizov pointed out that student chapter would have its own budget, which is the
same as our budget of $2000 per year, and thus is attractive to students. Our chapter is
entitled for 1) College Participation, 2) High School Award Participation or 3) Talks at
Local Schools, we could get up to $200 for each. Jim Jenkins pointed out that, as per the
budget presented, we are financially viable so that the question comes down to what do
       we want to do.

   2. Chapter Positions
There were major changes in the positions in the Chapter. Juan Arvelo said that he is
accepting an “Executive Board” position. He is also a technical chair of the incoming in
2010 ASA meeting in Baltimore. Jeff Dunne said that he could take on the job if he had
Juan’s assistance in the beginning. The remaining positions are listed below

ASA Chair: Jeff Dunne /Juan Arvelo
   Vice-Chair: Zach Upton
   President: Natalia Sizov
   Vice-President: Jennifer Cooper
   Secretary: Steve Benka
   Treasurer: Craig Olson
   Webmaster: Jennifer Cooper
   WAS Liaison: Paul Arveson
   AIP Liaison: Steven Benka
   IEEE Liaison: Jim Jenkins
Coordinator High School Demos: Paul Arveson
Coordinator Technical Tours: Shane Guan& Roman Serbyn

Please see Juan’s email to Elaine for more precise coordinator role distribution.

3. High School Coordinator

After the selection of officers, there was continued discussion regarding High School
involvement. Jeff Dunne, drawing from his experience as a teacher, suggested that
working with 10 graders can be a good place to start, and he said he could assist Paul
   Arveson.

4. 2009 Events
Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center @ UMD, Friday, 3 April
Juan Arvelo presented his plan for this event. This consists of a tour at 5-6:30 PM, dinner
at the Seven Seas Restaurant at 6:30-8:00PM and a performance starting at 8:00PM. The
tour of the facility will be led by Lawrence Kirkegaard or Neil Shade. There was
discussion, based on the Strathmore tour experience, as to whether Kirkgaard could
commit to definitely be there, and if he would be paid travel expenses. It was suggested
that it would make sense to make this a joint activity with the Washington Audio
Engineering Society, and that they might be able to assist in the speaker expenses. After
dinner the participants would go to any one of the three performances at the Center.
Details about these performances can be found at
http://claricesmithcenter.umd.edu/2009/c/performances. Roman Serbyn and Shane Guan
   will coordinate this event.

Joint Meeting with Audio Engineering Society
Shane Guan has e-mailed David Weinberg regarding this event. The timeframe is to be
   sometime between January to April.
Inter-Society Activity
At the beginning of the year Natalia Sizov applied for the ASA Innovative Project
initiative. The idea was to have a joint meeting between ASA DC Chapter and AIAA
National Capitol Section. Sometime in February we should know from the selecting
committee.

Acoustics Demonstration at Meeting
Paul Arveson would like to conduct an acoustics demonstration at a meeting.

Possible meeting at NOAA
Shane Guan would like to organize a meeting (Underwater Acoustics 101) at NOAA. The
preferred format is a Brown Bag in the middle of the day so that NOAA people who have
an interest in acoustics can attend. There seemed to be many issues regarding location
and timing for this event.

8:30 Meeting adjourned
