When the database is opened, the above screen should appear*. This is the front-page card for Stud Number 1, and every condor from the studbook has its own card. 1. 2. 3. Clicking this button will close the front-page card that is open, but Access will still be open. Clicking this button will print the front-page card that you currently have open. It is important to note that clicking on the print icon on the toolbar that is at the top of the computer screen will print every bird’s card. The condor’s age is increased by one every January 1st, which is generally only accurate to within four or five months. This allows the search for particular events pertaining to all condors hatched in the same breeding season. If the precise age of a particular bird is required, then it can be calculated by subtracting the condors birth date, “DOB”, from the current date. The number in that box is the stud number of the bird whose information is being displayed. To change to a different bird’s card, simply click on that box, enter the stud number of the desired condor, and hit return. Clicking that button will move the user to the next card (in this case, the card for Stud Number 2). Clicking this button will move the user to the final card (in this case, the card for Stud Number 235).

The “DB2000” icon should be in the bottom right-hand corner of the computer screen. Click on the box in the center of the “DB2000.” The following will show up:
Click on the tab that reads “Forms.” A list will then appear. Double click on “Static Main Form”, and the front-page card for Stud Number 1 will be on the screen. “SEARCHES” AND “STUD NOTES” BUTTONS
“Stud Notes” The “Stud Notes” button will bring up notes on the particular condor whose record is being viewed. For instance, clicking the “Stud Notes” button on Stud Number 179’s record will open the following window:
This window is only for Stud Number 179. To exit this window and return to the frontpage, click on the “X” in the upper right-hand corner. ** **To print this window, or any window that contains information of interest, click on the print button on the toolbar. Clicking this button will only print the screen that has just been opened, and it will print an entire list of data, even if the entire list is not visible on the computer screen. (Reminder: Do not use this for front-page printing.)
“Searches” The “Searches” button launches the following menu, which will be discussed in the next few pages.
SEARCH MENU OPTIONS
The “Searches” menu is divided into two categories: “Single Condor Searches” and “Multiple Condor Searches.” Single Condor Searches These searches can be used to find information on a particular condor. “Name”, “Tags”, and “Location Assigned ID” In “Single Condor Searches”, “Name”, “Tags”, and “Location Assigned ID” can be used for accessing the record of a particular bird without knowledge of that bird’s stud number. For instance, if the only information the user has about a particular condor is that it has a location assigned ID number of 004682, then clicking on the “Location Assigned ID” button and entering 004682 in the space provided opens the following screen:
(Note: If a condor only has a four-digit LA Zoo ID number associated with it, then it will be necessary to enter two zeros before the number.) Now associated with that ID number is Stud Number 103. To examine more information about Stud Number 103, exit the “Location ID Query” box (clicking on the “X” in the upper right-hand corner), then exit the “Searches” menu, which will lead back to the front page. From the front page, information about any condor can be retrieved.
“Event History” The other button available in “Single Condor Searches” is the “Event History” button. Clicking on this button will open a small window which requires a stud number. Entering the stud number of any particular bird (this is Stud Number 184) will bring up the entire event history of that bird. To exit this window, click “X”. (Remember: The window below can be printed by clicking the print icon on the toolbar.)
Multiple Condor Searches These searches are for referencing facts about several condors at the same time. “Common Events” Under this menu, it is possible to find all occurrences of a particular event, e.g., death, capture, transfer, release, or hatching, and to cross-reference those events with a particular rearing type. On the screen below, “Capture” has been chosen as the event and “Parent” as the rearing type. Clicking the “Only Common Event” button will open a window that contains every capture of every condor. The window will have the stud number, the date of capture, and from which area the bird was captured. To limit the search to only instances in which the captured condor was parent reared, click on the “With Rearing” button immediately to the right of the “Only Common Event” Button. “Offspring” The “Offspring” button allows the user to find the offspring of a particular condor or pair of condors. After opening this menu, enter the stud number of the sire and dam whose offspring you wish to find. Then, click on one of the available buttons for the desired screen and a list of stud numbers will open. For example, on the screen shown overleaf, Stud Number 3 has been entered as the sire and Stud Number 12 as the dam. Clicking on the “Offspring of both Sire and Dam” button will bring a list of six condors whose sire is Stud Number 3 and whose dam is Stud Number 12.
“In Same Release Batch” This button allows the user to find all of the birds in a given release batch. It will give the stud number and the location of the release. “Sex Specific Searches” This button is used to find information relating only females or only males. Clicking this button will bring up the following screen:
“Age and Location Search” This button finds all birds of a specific age, all birds in a particular area, or it can match both birds in a specified region with a given age. Clicking this button will bring up the following screen:
This window is divided up into three categories: “Mortality Search For All Birds, “Search For All Birds With A Common Age In A Specified Region” and “Search For All Birds In A Specified Region.” “Mortality Search For All Birds” To find all living condors that are currently of age six, simply click on the black “Of A Particular Age” button and enter the number 6. This will open a screen listing every alive condor that is currently six years old. If looking for a listing of all deceased condors, click on the “Deceased Condors” button. If a more precise search is desired, clicking on the red “Of A Particular Age” button and entering an age, say six years old (enter the number 6), will open a screen with a record of all the condors that died when they were six years old. “Search For All Birds With A Common Age In A Specified Region” This search will access information about all of the birds that are a given age in a given area. For example, clicking on the button that reads “AZ Wild” will bring up a window with a space for entry. Entering the number six and hitting return will open the following screen, with a listing of all six-year-old condors currently in the Arizona wild:
“Search For All Birds In A Specified Region” Clicking any of these buttons will bring up a similar screen as above, but age is not a factor. Clicking on the LAZ button, for instance, will give a list of every condor currently at the Los Angeles Zoo.
