STAY HEALTHY THIS WINTER – TIPS FROM NURSE DEVINE Dance! Dancing is a great way to get a cardio-vascular work out for the entire family. Parents you can set a great example and include your children in the workout routine in the safety of your home. Dance to music that you and your children enjoy together. Various types of repetitive moves to keep up with the beat of the music can really get your circulation going. With Valentines Day being celebrated on the 14th February is a great time to consider the importance of a physically healthy heart. An additional benefit to exercise is that the energy being used will allow all of you to enjoy a better sleep. SNOW CLOSING INFORMATION 215-400-SNOW www.phila.k12.pa.us GREENFIELD HOME & SCHOOL NEWS FEBRUARY 2008 GREENING GREENFIELD UPDATES PENNY DRIVE FUND RAISER – We officially kicked off our Greening Greenfield initiative with our students on January 30 with an assembly presentation on Green Building and Sustainability. At the assembly we also launch a Penny Drive competition to raise $2,601.44 to purchase and install our own weather station at Greenfield. Through the month of February we will have a competition among the homerooms to see which class will raise the most money towards our goal. Each classroom will have their own collection jar for students to contribute any loose change. A chart displayed in the 1st floor lobby will track the progress of our Drive. SILENT AUCTION & SOCIAL TO BENEFIT GREENING GREENFIELD INITIATIVE – Save the date and mark your calendars for Thursday April 10 from 6:30-10pm. We will have a fun and fabulous event to benefit our Greening Greenfield initiative. There will be fantastic auction items to bid on – everything from art pieces, hand crafts, jewelry and collectors items to sports tickets, theater tickets and fine dining certificates. We will have wonderful food, wines and beers and music by a jazz band of talented Greenfield parents. All in a beautiful, sleek venue, Dane Décor in Old City. Don’t miss it! THE DAILY GREEN Greenfield’s Online Newspaper Please take a look at our online student newspaper. It is a wonderful collection of stories, poems and photographs all done by Greenfield students under the wonderful direction of one of our teachers, Ms. Barbara Finkel. This issue features a story and pictures of our new turbo tower, which we purchased with funds received through State Representative Babette Josephs and the Department of Community and Economic Development. Below is the link. http://thedailygreen.googlepages.com/thedailygreen200708 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED CLASSROOM REPRESENTATIVES – Following the call for volunteers in last month’s newsletter we had a couple of parents step up as Class Reps for two of the homerooms. However, we still have eight classrooms needing a parent representative – Room 113A, 113B, 203, 206, 301, 302, 303, 305, 306, and 309. If you would like to be the Rep for your child’s classroom, please place a note in the H&S mailbox. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS – If you have some time to spare, we could use your help in our school library. Ms. Moniot is looking for anyone that can come into to the library to assist with shelving books, repairing books, and tidying up the bookshelves. Whether you have just 15 or 20 minutes or you have an hour, Ms. M. will put you to work. She is looking for volunteers who can come in on a regular basis or even parents who can just come in once or twice. Please put a note in the Home & School mailbox or in Ms. M’s mailbox with your name, contact info, and availability. INDOOR RECESS COLLECTION – PLEASE DONATE NOW Students are enjoying the new activities during winter months! Thanks to Mr. Chambliss and Home & School, we have purchased playing cards, trivia games, Yahtzee, checkers, chess, backgammon, suduko/crossword/seek-n-find books, and math cards for our students to use during indoor recess. If you would like to donate additional items, please drop them off at the Office labeled “Indoor Recess.” We would like to add additional cards, coloring books, crayons, mind games, activity books, brain quests, chess, checkers, reading books, etc. - basically any games or activities that can be played in 15 minutes or so. [During the winter months when the temperature dips below freezing it is the policy of the School District to have indoor recess for the students during their lunch period. Indoor recess for our students in grades K - 6 is held in the auditorium. Grades 7 and 8 have indoor recess in the gym.] 2007 NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND SCHOOL REPORT IS AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW The 2007 No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Greenfield school report cards are available in the Main office at Greenfield, at all branches of the Free Library and at www.paayp.com. Informing parents of their right to view their school report card is a mandate of the federal NCLB Act.
