The Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certification was created in the US from the initial collaborative efforts of the National Career Development Association, the National Occupational Information Coordinating Committee, and the Career Development Training Institute in response to the dramatic increase in the need for increased and improved global career development services. The term facilitator was used in order to include individuals from various backgrounds, educations, and job functions. As a result, the GCDF credential is becoming popular among national institutions. In just over 10 years, the GCDF training program has become an important part of a global, comprehensive strategy to deliver career services. The GCDF credential demonstrates that an individual has command of country-specific career information and provides consumers as well as other professionals with specific referral information regarding skilled career services providers. GCDFs advocate for all clients in the community, especially at career centers.
