Along with the market economy and higher education expansion in China, the history of research and practice of career counseling has been close to twenty years. The concept of career counseling was introduced to China from Western cultures. It has been a challenging and rewarding journey to explore how researchers can best utilize counseling theory within Chinese culture and its modernizing society. The purpose of this article is to examine the achievements and challenges they have on the localization of career development, in hope of gaining some meaningful insight, and to explore strategies for promoting future development. In conclusion, career counseling and career development has been successfully introduced to China. It is becoming an established professional field. However, to achieve localization and to effectively provide service to Chinese people, there is a long way to go.
