In October, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Winter v. NRDC, a case that will decide whether national security takes precedence over the wellbeing of marine mammals and will determine the future of legal action in preventing the unhampered use of MFA sonar. Here she describes a new theory of cultural evolution, the Cultural Transformation Theory, which proposes two basic models of human society: a partnership model (seen in Neolithic cultures), in which social and environmental relations are based on equality, cooperation and mutual respect, and a hierarchical dominator model that came after, in which one half of humanity is ranked over the other and over the rest of nature.
