FDIC Chairman Sheila C. Bair recently addressed a luncheon of Texas banking leaders marking the 75th anniversary of the FDIC, the oldest and largest deposit insurance corporation in the world. The theme of the luncheon was "Consumer Protections and Financial Education." Understanding your finances is the first step to financial independence and personal wealth, Bair said. The panel participants represented a small portion of the agencies and advocates in Texas that promote financial literacy and education for the Texas banking industry. The TBA Foundation is active in the realm of activity for financial literacy and serves as a resource for TBA member banks for some programs. Included are: 1. Teach Children to Save, 2. Get Smart About Credit, 3. Junior Achievement, and 4. FDIC's Money Smart, Money Smart for Young Adults.
