Kerry In a state that last elected a Republican senator in 1972, there are slim hopes of dislodging the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, four-term Sen. John Kerry (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 6%). Just about every newspaper article on the 55-year-old Beatty mentions his heroic background: wounded in action at Grenada in 1983, years of giving training in counter-terrorism to more than 750,000 persons from Logan Airport to the Rose Bowl, and being awarded the coveted "Guardian Award" from the International Association of Counter-terrorism and Security Professionals. In this campaign, he has not only pledged to keep the Bush tax cuts, but signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to "oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses."
