Description: Aligning learning with business strategy is a critical success factor for any learning organization. Those companies that do this alignment well win awards and are resilient during economic downturns. Aligned learning organizations earn the proverbial seat at the table. There is no question that alignment is critical. However, there are questions about exactly how to go about becoming an aligned learning organization. For many, achieving alignment can seem elusive. How do some organizations do this so well? Is there some magic formula for their success? There is no magic involved in creating alignment, but I believe there is a formula for successfully aligning learning organizations with business strategy. The formula is leadership engagement plus business rigor equals alignment. At Ingersoll Rand University, I have the opportunity to put this formula into practice. It provides distinct strategies that create alignment, and the sum of these strategies produces a powerful process of alignment. Let's look more closely at the first part of the alignment formula: leadership engagement. When our learning organizations operate with a high level of leadership engagement, we are not pushing learning solutions out to the business units; rather the businesses are pulling our solutions to them. The key is to engage leaders from all levels of the business in all aspects of our instructional design and key operational processes. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
