Library media specialists can start by reviewing the district's current board-adopted acceptable use policy (AUP) for inclusion of issues like responsible use by student and staff, access to legal information based on student First Amendment rights, student instruction on safe and effective Internet use, protection of personal privacy, and recognition of the educational uses of Web 2.0 social technologies. Library media specialists can reach out to parents by providing varied educational opportunities and resources, including informative classes, newsletter articles, safety brochures, and books in the library media center about safe and beneficial Internet use by children and young adults.
