REMEDIAL CERTIFICATE USE RULES FOR BMV COMPLIANCE According to Ohio’s motor vehicle laws an individual completes the Remedial Driving Instruction and/or the Juvenile Driver Intervention Course for the following reasons: to comply with the reinstatement conditions of a driver’s license suspension, to comply with a judge’s orders, or to obtain a two point credit. Eight Hour Remedial Course Is completed to comply with the conditions of reinstatement for a 12 Point Suspension and/or OVUAC Suspension. Drivers 19 years of age or older may complete the remedial driving instruction to comply with conditions of reinstatement for a Probationary License Suspension. Effective, January 1, 2004, the course can be completed to grant a two point credit to Ohio drivers who have at least two, but less than twelve points, charged against their Ohio driving record within a two year period. Is also completed to comply with a judge’s order as indicated under Section 4510.02 of the Ohio Revised Code (drivers any age must comply with the court’s order). Juvenile Driver Intervention Program Is completed to comply with the conditions of reinstatement of the Probationary License Suspension. Drivers 18 years of age or younger may complete the Juvenile Driver Intervention Program to comply with their reinstatement requirements for the 12 Point and OVUAC Suspensions also. Should not be completed if the applicant is 19 years of age or older. The applicant should be advised to complete the eight hour remedial course. The course cannot be completed for the purpose of obtaining a two point credit. Court Ordered Remedial In the event the court ordered the applicant to complete the Remedial Driver course, forward the certificate to that court. The person who completes the Remedial Driving Instruction Course to comply with a judge’s order will not be approved for the two point credit. Processing the Remedial Certificate Please ensure the form has been filled out in its entirety. If all fields are not completed, processing the certificate is delayed. The certificate must be returned to the remedial school, or the school contacted to obtain the information. Missing information often includes course operator number, completion date, and reason course was completed. The remedial instructors have the option of mailing the certificates themselves or distributing the certificates to the class members. Each class member is then responsible for forwarding their own certificate to the BMV or Court. If mailing the certificate to the BMV, send to: Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Attn: Points & Juvenile Offender Unit, P.O. Box 16784, Columbus, Ohio 43216-6784. This address is provided at the bottom of the form. Questions? Contact Carletta Rusher, BMV Supervisor at 614/752-2043.
