                                                             FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PROS OFFER POINTERS AT THE SPORTSMEN’S SHOW

Four of the Midwest’s finest hunting and angling professionals will be at the 43 rd
annual Sioux Empire Sportsmen’s Show, offering free informative seminars. The show runs
Thursday, March 11 to Sunday, March 14 at the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center.
Meet the pros appearing at this year’s show:
TOMMY SKARLIS: A native of Iowa, Tommy Skarlis’ first fishing memory was
hooking a Bluegill while fishing with his mom. He continued perfecting his fishing skills on
Iowa’s Clear Lake, the Mississippi River and its backwaters, and on countless small lakes,
farm ponds and expansive reservoirs throughout the Midwest.
With all that practice, Tommy ultimately became proficient as a multi-species
angler. His uncanny knack for stalking walleyes was turned into a tournament-fishing
career that took root in 1991. From 1993 to 1998, he fished the Masters Walleye Council
(MWC), winning several honors. In 1996, he joined In-Fisherman’s Professional Walleye
Trail (PWT), where he’s snatched nine top 10 finishes. His total weight of 138.28 pounds for
15 fish at the 2002 Lake Erie PWT event set an all time world record for total tournament
weight in a professional event. Skarlis was named PWT Angler of the Year in 2004,
Ranger Cup Champion in 2005, and Ironman Champion in 2007. In 2008, Tommy won
the most prestigious title in walleye fishing—the FLW Walleye Tour Championship.
Tommy’s seminars, scheduled Thursday and Friday, include “Exciting New Walleye
Tactics,” and “Find and Catch More Walleyes.”
JUDD COONEY: Judd Cooney grew up hunting, fishing, bow hunting and
trapping in rural Luverne, Minnesota. By the seventh grade, he knew that he wanted to
spend his life in the outdoors.
With a degree in wildlife management under his belt, Judd went to work for the
Alaska Department of Fish and Game. During a stint in the Army, he was post game
warden at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs. He then spent several years as a
Colorado wildlife conservation officer, where he began adding outdoor writing and
photography to the mix of his endeavors.
In 1977, Judd started his own guiding and outfitting business, while also doing
some serious hunting on his own. His Iowa Trophy Whitetail Outfitters business specializes
in guiding groups in both whitetail and turkey hunting. He has been a senior member of
the Pope & Young Club since 1980, and was elected to the Bowhunters Hall of Fame in
2001. A 42-year member of the Outdoor Writers Association, he is the recipient of their
prestigious Ham Brown Award.
Judd’s seminars will explore “Whitetail Tactics and Techniques” and “Turkey
Tactics and Techniques,” both from an outfitter’s perspective. His sessions are scheduled
on Thursday and Friday.
JASON MITCHELL: Jason Mitchell, of Devils Lake, North Dakota, has earned a
reputation as a legendary guide on his hometown lake. He is a veteran member of Devil
Lake’s famed Perch Patrol Guide Service, one of the largest open water guide services in
the Midwest. His angling prowess has been highlighted in many outdoor publications, as

well as newspapers, radio and television. He recently launched his own television show,
Jason Mitchell Outdoors (formerly Tony Dean Outdoors). He is also the owner of Jason
Mitchell Rod Company.
Jason will cover two subjects in his weekend seminars: “Trolling Tactics to Catch
Walleyes” and “Targeting Walleyes in Shallow Water All Summer.”
KURT AMUNDSON: Kurt Amundson is an avid outdoorsman and outdoor writer
from Starbuck, Minnesota. His big passion is hunting whitetail deer. He spends several
days in the stand each fall in pursuit of big bucks. A realtor by trade, Kurt markets and
sells hunting land. He has purchased several farms and has spent countless hours
improving the land for wildlife. His outdoor columns have been featured in Outdoors
Weekly, MidWest Outdoors, Dakota Outdoors and Outdoor News.
On Saturday and Sunday, Kurt will cover both “Big Buck Strategies” and “100%
Food Plots.”
Kids get in on the action at the Sportsmen’s Show, too. The pros from Scheels will
host special weekend Kids’ Fishing Workshops. The sessions are scheduled Saturday at 11
a.m. and Sunday at noon. The Fishing Workshops will cover fish identification, water
safety and the importance of involving parents in kids’ activities. All children attending
will receive tackle samples and other fishing “goodies.”
        The Sioux Empire Sportsmen’s Show will be open Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.;
Friday from noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to
6 p.m. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $2.50 for children aged six to 12, with children five
and under admitted free of charge.

sponsored by the Sioux Falls Cosmopolitan Club. For more information, call 763-755-8111,
