LABORATORY WORK PROCEDURES ‐ GUIDELINE In order complete work safely in our labs, all laboratory users must submit a written procedure for each task to the safety committee before commencement of the laboratory work. Once approved by the Safety Coordinator or /and one of the Safety Committee member and laboratory technician: 1) one copy should be posted by the assigned work space; 2) second copy inserted into the specially designated Procedures Folder for a particular laboratory; 3) third copy should be submitted to the Safety Coordinator for records keeping. The supervisors are responsible for training associates on these procedures. The following are the general guidelines for the elements of the procedure. Guidelines for the procedure: The procedure must include as a minimum all the following sections: 1) Introduction a. General description of the task that the procedure describes. b. Date and duration of the task 2) Procedure a. Stepwise sequential description of activities to be carried in the task. These should be specific and describe clearly what is to be done. 3) Equipment and Reagents a. Description of equipment required to complete the job b. Description of reagents and chemicals that will be used and availability of MSDS 4) Hazard Identification and Management a. Mention of the hazards associated with this task b. Describe the hazard management procedures put in place (mechanical controls and PPE). c. Link to the Hazard assessment checklist. The procedure should include if necessary items identified in the hazard assessment checklist. 5) Emergency plan a. Identify nearest first aid facility. b. Identify nearest eye wash and safety shower c. Identify spill management kits d. List any specific contacts that must be notified in case of any emergency or when more information about the task is needed. 6) Waste disposal procedure a. Identify cleaning up procedures. b. Specify waste disposal procedures 7) Reference a. Reference to the relevant already existing procedures (ASTM or others).
