THE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM EXPANDS
A number of small manufacturers and designers have “discovered gold at the end of the rainbow” to quote one of the users. During the last
year the Technology Station in Clothing and Textiles has added on to its already wide array of technology available in its Emerging Entrepre-
neur Technology Platform. This centre situated between the academic department and the Technology Station allows both students and
SMMEs to make use of what for most businesses would be regarded as very expensive equipment. The centre allows students and SMMEs to
complete their garments or products professionally as well as being able to conduct research and experiment with new materials.
The equipment in the facility funded exclusively by Tshumisano and has made an
immediate impact on many emerging and established businesses. SMMEs when visiting
the centre in most cases also use the opportunity to obtain advise from the staff at
the Technology Station on assembly methods and ideas on how to improve the quality
of their products, especially when using new or unfamiliar materials. The centre is
becoming so popular and immediate in its support to the clothing and textile industry
that there has been requests from various quarters to roll the concept out to other
more accessible areas.
The following machines are available, viz. button hole machine, Merrow machine,
Bartack machine, hemming machine, sample embroidery machine, Eyelet button hole
Welding machine joining two pieces of material
machine, cover seam machine and a walking foot machine.
New additions to the platform is an Ultrasonic Welding Machine, that weld synthetic or synthetic blend materials together and an auto-
mated jet pocket machine that sews a complete jet pocket in a couple of seconds. A largely subsidized fee is levied for this service.
