Every normal person wishes joy in their life. There is little scope of this here on Earth at present. We have wars,
diseases, disasters, unemployment, AIDS, bombs, etc.
But has this always been as bad as it is now?
In 1971 fewer than 20 - 30 died in terrorist attacks.
In 1983 it could be argued that there where 1,000+ who died.
(in 2007 it could be argued 10,000+ who died.)
People try to find joy in having holidays, or sport, or a „loose‟ (self-centred) lifestyle.
There have been many scientific advances lately, but does commerce that manufactures these products (from the
scientific advances) give us joy?
And if there is joy, then it is a „fleeting joy‟ - as soon one game has been conquered, it has lost its appeal, a new game
is lusted after – thus no satisfaction!

1Tim. 6v9-10 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and hurtful
desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils; it is through
this craving that some have wondered away from the faith and pierced their hearts with many pangs.
It is the love of money, - but clearly not having enough or everything, is relative to what you already have.
Gal 6v7-8 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who
sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit
           reap eternal life.
We would be neglecting the Spiritual aspects of life. When a farmer sows seed into the ground, it disappears from view
and is not seen again. But it has not gone, because in a month‟s time green shoots will be seen.
And so with your actions in life.
Job 17v1-16 Talks about all types of people and their actions.
What is righteous Job‟s hope if he, but also these worthless ones, all end their life in the grave?
However God commands that we must be joyful in this world.
Hew. 12v2 Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfector of our faith/fidelity/assurance, who for the joy that was set
before him endured the “execution pole”, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of
The end result was joy. If we look intently at what is before us, we see all aspects – exactly as Jesus showed us and to
his following apostles.
Hew. 10v32-34 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with
sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those
so treated. For you had compassion on the prisoners, and that you joyfully accepted the plundering of your
property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one.
In man there is a spirit to have things met or fulfilled, both body and spirit to be balanced - one with the other.
Matt. 5v3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

Often a soft gesture when a cruel thing has happened - this will help a fellow brother or sister. God cares for us
likewise. This relationship that we have will strengthen the bond between us. God is happy when he can see that we
help each other in this cruel world.
Rom. 12v12 Rejoice in your expectation, be patient in your tribulation, be constant in prayer.

When this system of things passes away, then we look forward to the new system of The Millennium. Persevere in
prayer when things get hard and the problems we have begin to bare down upon us.

Joy is a state of happiness.

Prov. 17v22 A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones.
People have good recuperative powers when they are happy and joyful.
People who moan get pulled down by their negative outlook on life.

Eccl. 2v10 ... for my heart found pleasure in all my work.
The heart was made joyful in work (later the passage goes onto say that this isn't the whole of life but rather 'the
seeking after God' should be).

Luke 12v15 And he said to them, 'Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man's life does not consist in the
          abundance of his possessions.'
Gal. 5v22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, Joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-
control; against such there is no law.
Joy is the fruitage of the spirit.

Do we see happiness in the bulk of the people around us?

Most people are striving for it but never see it!
Jude v13 ...... wandering stars for whom the nether gloom of darkness has been reserved for ever.
This is similar to the mariners.
How could they chart their ways across the sea if the stars themselves kept moving about the sky in a random manner?
It is the same with our lives we need to know where we are going.

We should choose The Truth that is unchanging and this guidance is found within The Bible to guide us.
Rev. 18v1-24 The passage talks about Babylon – and we are told that we must get out of her.

All the major religions all being worldly, show that there is no love expressed in the communities that these religions
are supposedly to represent – they are always fighting one another internally and externally, either covertly or overtly!
We all must read The Truth and so gain knowledge from The Bible. We will then know how to behave.

Psalm 118v6 With God on my side I do not fear. What can man do to me?
We know that we are now entitled to a resurrection because of Jesus Christ in His new world. So the worse that Satan
can do is take our life in this world.
John 17v3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only one true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.
Taking in knowledge is not the only thing we have to do, but we have to ACT on it. The Greek word for 'acting on it'
means 'on-going'.

Why can we find Joy in serving God?

1Thes. 2v19-20 For what is our expectation or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not
you? For you are our glory and joy.
On Paul‟s 2nd missionary journey he gave them knowledge. However the Greek Jews put pressure on Paul and so after
2 months he had to move on. The Jews followed on to make Paul‟s life difficult. Paul wrote to the Thessalonians by
saying I have sent Timothy to find out how you are getting on.
1Thes. 1v6-8 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with joy
inspired by the Holy Spirit; so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.

Joy comes from helping each other.

The most important thing is the knowledge and recognition of His creation, His purpose and will for us all. Everything
else is secondary.
We have joy through our tribulation (by external persecutors) because we are always looking forward knowing that we
are seeking God‟s kingdom of The Millennium.

Jesus Christ's teaching on the subject.

Matt. 5v10-11 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my
account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.
James 1v2-4 Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith
produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete,
        lacking in nothing.

The reward leads to everlasting life.
In good company with prophets - God is joyful.

          We must be assayed/tested/proved!
Our faith/fidelity/assurance grows with every test. Endurance is required to the end.
Clearly all sane people wish for a happy and joyful life without pain and suffering, but we fail in many areas.
But the tests give us an opportunity to find out where these weaknesses are.
From the results, if we are honest, then know what needs to be worked on.
Like clay in God's hands we may become moulded into perfected vessels.
We lack nothing at the end of this moulding from life‟s experiences and are ready to progress successfully into and
through The Millennium.
To remain steadfast means 'to hold ones ground'
Matt. 6v31-33 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we
wear?' For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But
seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.
The point of this is that we must keep seeking/striving to fulfil Yahweh‟s Desire of us. This is first God‟s kingdom and
then all other things will be added.
Eph. 3v20 How Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus
          through the Gospel.
Hew. 6v10 For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the principled love that you showed for his sake in
serving the saints, as you still do.

Do we forget the good things that we have done?

God records everything that we do - even the smallest things. These records in heaven will not rust or die!
The Creator is most interested in everything that we do.
If we have good hearts, then we have the right soil for the seed to grow and produce fruit.
We are all in this boat together.

Summing up:-

We could be like the monkey and the cookie jar!
The monkey likes the cookie at the bottom of the jar, but when he puts his hand in and grabs it; now he tries to pull it
out but his hand is stuck. The monkey does not wish to let go of the cookie now he has got it!
We can be caught like that!
God has given us all these things, which we can be shown how to get hold of and when the time is correct.
However Satan designs the trap and then makes the treats look tempting, so that the greedy ones amongst us
grab the treats immediately and so get caught within this present worldly system of things!
1Tim. 6v18-19 They are to do good, to be rich in good deeds, liberal and generous, thus laying up for themselves a
good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life which is life indeed.

So - Do not be tempted by worldly goods, the nice things that Satan offers, because we will be given all these things
and more in God‟s time.

Let us not make a monkey of ourselves!

Acts 20v35 In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the
Lord Jesus, how he said 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'
