Fundraising Management Certificate Program Scholarship Application
The University of Washington Tacoma, KeyBank Professional Development Center is offering partial scholarships for continuing or new students attending the UW Tacoma Fundraising Management Certificate Program beginning Autumn Quarter 2008. The scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate both financial need and outstanding academic achievement. Students must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average on their 2 years of college/university transcripts and/or a strong letter of recommendation from an employer/supervisor relevant to their experience in the field. A personal essay is also required. Students must be accepted into the Fundraising Management Certificate Program (see Application Process) before requesting a Scholarship. The Program Application and the Scholarship Application may be submitted together or separately, however, the Scholarship Application will not be reviewed until the Program Application has been received. Scholarships are only for students who plan to participate in the entire Fundraising Management Certificate Program. Scholarships for individual classes are not available. Scholarship recipients may receive an award up to a maximum of $825 for the year, to be distributed over three quarters of enrollment (1/3 of the value or $275 each quarter). Scholarship money may be used to cover tuition expenses only and is contingent on the student maintaining a passing grade in all classes in the program. CRITERIA Evidence of financial need as determined by and outlined in your personal essay. Quality of personal essay. Evidence of academic merit. Minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0. and/or a strong letter of recommendation from an employer/supervisor relevant to your experience in the field. Special consideration will be given to students who are employed in a non-profit agency. An unofficial transcript demonstrating a GPA of 3.0 or better and/or a strong letter of recommendation from an employer/supervisor relevant to your experience in the field. An essay of 1,000 words or less describing the applicant's personal challenges, educational experiences and/or life goals. The essay must be typed using 12-point font, double spaced and must not exceed 2 pages.
PERSONAL ESSAY The personal essay is a very important part of this application. It is your opportunity to explain why you deserve to receive this scholarship. You may discuss personal challenges and how they impact your educational goals. Please include relevant details about your educational experience to date, your life goals and how your UW TACOMA education will facilitate these goals. Frequently asked questions about applying for UW Tacoma scholarships How do I prove financial need? Your personal essay must document your need for financial assistance in the program. You may document this need through various means, including describing your present financial situation, your agency’s financial status, your extenuating circumstances, etc. Should I apply if I have a low financial need? Although financial need is an important factor, it is not the only factor considered. A strong GPA and well-written essay can balance out a low need. Students who have no financial need are unlikely to receive scholarships. How is academic merit determined? Academic merit is based on your GPA; the best documentation of GPA is a transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable) from your institution of higher education. What should I say in my essay? Your essay should tell the committee something about yourself, why you are pursuing the educational path you have chosen, and any financial or personal challenges that you have overcome or are currently dealing with. You want to make a solid case for why you should be selected to receive a scholarship. How long should I make my essay? Your essay should not exceed 1,000 words or 2 1/2 pages, typed, double spaced with 12-point font. Essays are judged on quality, not word count, but the committee will not read more than 21/2 pages. Since committee members must thoroughly review every essay submitted, applicants who can make their case in a concise manner make the best impression. How will I know if I've been awarded a scholarship? Everyone who applies will be notified in writing of the result, whether they were awarded a scholarship or not. Who decides the awards? The UW Tacoma KeyBank Professional Development Center Scholarship Committee consists of faculty and staff from the Office of Continuing Studies and the Fundraising Management Certificate Program. What is the dollar value of the scholarship? Unless stated otherwise on the cover sheet, the value will be up to a maximum of $825 for the year. The money will be distributed in three equal payments over three quarters (1/3, i.e., $275 each quarter only for tuition). Students must maintain a passing grade in all classes in the program to continue to be eligible for the funds. Can I use the funds for books or other expenses besides tuition? Unless otherwise noted on the cover sheet, scholarship funds cover only tuition costs as noted above. Are there other obligations attached to receiving scholarship funds? Generally, scholarship recipients are expected to write thank you letters to the donors and occasionally participate in events to thank donors who have funded the scholarships.
