Bring in your signed Calendar!
Put an “X” over each day you walk, bike, scooter or skate to school. Have your parent or legal guardian sign the back of the calendar at the end of the month and turn it in to your teacher by November 7. Get walkin’ and rollin’!
Walking and biking are healthy and fun ways to get to school!
Join the Walk ‘n’ Roll to School campaign beginning on Monday, October 6. All participants will be entered into a prize drawing to win some cool prizes!
Lydiksen Elementary School is partnering with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Kaiser Permanente and the Tri-Valley Air Quality Resource Team to launch the Walk ’n’ Roll to School campaign. The goal of the campaign is to educate students and parents about the alternatives of getting to and from school. In most communities, school-related traffic accounts for about 20% of morning peak hour traffic. This can be greatly reduced if parents and students walked or biked to school, rather than drove their cars. With reduced vehicular traffic, a sense of safety in and around the school is more apparent. Another issue on the rise in many communities is childhood obesity. Walking and biking to school may give children an opportunity to exercise which they would not necessarily have if they were driven. Walking and biking also improves air quality! To encourage parents and students to walk and roll to school, we are holding a month-long promotion which will be kicked off with International Walk to School Day on October 8th. To participate, students will complete the attached registration form and turn it in by October 3rd. Students will be encouraged to walk or bike to and from school and can keep track of their participation on the monthly calendar provided on the back. The completed calendar is due on Friday, November 7th. All participants that submit a calendar will receive a special surprise and be eligible to win a grand prize plus other great prizes in a random drawing. To see the difference we are making by walking and rolling to school, we will ask students how they got to school every day for one week in late September and again in early November to obtain a percentage change. In mid-November, we will announce the survey results and the drawing winners at a school assembly. Join your classmates and make a difference at Lydiksen! Walk and roll to school!
