A Finmeccanica Company
Alenia Aermacchi, a subsidiary of Alenia Aeronautica, is a world leader in the design, production and
support of military training aircraft and offers the largest range of products that meet the requirements
of all training phases from piston-engined primary to jet-powered basic, advanced and lead-in fighter
trainers. These include the M-346, the only all-new European LIFT - Lead In Fighter Trainer - and the
MB-339 flown by the Italian Air Force Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team.
Founded in 1913, the company has built over 7,000 aircraft including about 2,000 trainers to more
than 40 countries. It was acquired by Finmeccanica in 2003 and now operates as a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Alenia Aeronautica. The experience gained in the military sector has allowed the
company to extend its business also to the civil aviation field, particularly engine nacelles supplied to
all leading manufacturers. The company also participates in a number of major international military
The company is based at Venegono Superiore (Varese province), with facilities including its own
airfield, extensive structural laboratories and workshops, wind and water tunnels. The workforce totals
about 1,870 people.
Alenia Aermacchi has always designed and developed its aircraft autonomously with highly qualified
personnel and leading edge technologies. The company has constantly expanded and enhanced its
activities to rank high in military trainers, military programmes and civil programmes.

• M-346 MASTER is the most modern trainer available today in Europe and the only one in the
world conceived specifically to train the pilots who will fly advanced and high performance
aircraft like the Eurofighter Typhoon. In February 2009 the M-346 was selected by the United
Arab Emirates for their new trainer requirement. Furthermore, it is in the short list by
Singapore within the Fighter Wings Course (FWC) Programmes, which is aimed to replace the
current fleet of advanced trainers. The aircraft has also been evaluated by several
international air forces, including most recently France. The Italian Air Force Experimental
Flying Unit has tested it jointly with Alenia Aermacchi. The M-346 is the type which best
answers the Eurotraining requirements. The Italian Air Force should sign soon the contract
soon about the first bach of the M-346 trainers to fulfill the advanced/lead-in fighter training
requirements for pilots that will fly 4 and 5 generation combat aircraft.
• MB-339, basic-advanced turbofan trainer, is known above as all the mount of the Frecce
Tricolori, the prestigious Italian Air Force display team. Its main role is that of advanced
trainer, in Italy and in various other countries. The current production standard, the CD model,
with full digital avionics and embedded simulation, is suitable for a complete lead-in fighter
training, including sophisticated skills like in-flight refuelling.
Alenia Aeronautica, a Finmeccanica Company, is the largest Italian aeronautic player which operates world-wide in the
commercial and military aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles and aerostructures. Alenia Aeronautica also coordinates the
activities of Alenia Aermacchi and Alenia Aeronavali - wholly owned companies – respectively active in the design and
manufacturing of military trainer aircraft and in the overhaul, maintenance and modification of military and civil aircraft. With its
joint ventures ATR, SCAC and Superjet International, Alenia Aeronautica is the world leader in the regional turboprop market
and a top player in the regional jet sector. Over 2008 Alenia Aeronautica reported revenues of 2,530 millions Euro, backlog for
8,281 millions Euro and orders for 2,720. The total workforce is 13,907.
• M-311 is a basic-advanced jet trainer that offers true jet performance at costs comparable with
those of heavy turboprop aircraft. The result is an aircraft that takes pilots immediately. «I was
impressed with the M-311» a test pilot of the UK wrote after a flight. «The aircraft has a
superb blend of precise handling yet docile and predictable behaviour, excellent medium and
low-level performance and a comprehensive suite of avionics».
• SF-260 is the world’s most widespread screener and primary trainer. Known for its pure lines
and excellent flying characteristics, initially conceived as a sports plane, it is powered by a 260
HP six cylinder engine. The Italian Air Force uses the SF-260EA at the Latina Flying School
both to screen student pilots and for some further training stages. The SF-260 has been used
by various civilian aerobatic teams and by several flight schools of airlines. Some 27 different
military customers have already bought about 900 SF-260 in all variants.
Alenia Aermacchi’s is a partner in international military programmes including:
• Eurofighter Typhoon, with responsibility for the design and development of underwing wing
pylons, Stub Pylons, twin missile and twin store carriers, wing to fuselage fairings and titanium engine
• AMX tactical attack aircraft, with Alenia Aeronautica and Embraer. A Mid-Life Updating
programme is underway for the Italian Air Force
• Panavia Tornado, Alenia Aermacchi designed and produced underwing pylons and wing tips,
roots. After production phase Alenia Aermacchi produces spare parts of mentioned items and
performs the embodiment of MLU modifications into the underwing pylons
