Visiting Artist Season
proudly sponsored by Fulton Bank
Friday, October 3, 8 p.m. Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall The musical landscape is teeming with singer/songwriters, many of them quite capa ble, but only a handful have something truly distinctive to offer. Dubbed “the artist to watch in 2008,” by Billboard, Kate Voegele belongs in the latter category. Don’t Look Away, Voegele’s first full length album, is a revelation, as the 20 year old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Voegele’s musical and acting abilities were also featured in several episodes of last season’s TV show One Tree Hill. www.katevoegele.com

Mahler Resurrected
Saturday, September 27, 7:30 p.m. Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre Lyric Fest presents the colorful, tumultuous life of Gustav Mahler in a theatrical presenta tion bringing the composer to life with songs, letters, and biographical narration. Against the backdrop of turn of the century, anti Semitic Vienna, Gustav Mahler emerged as a premiere operatic and symphonic conductor of his day. Composing only in the summer months, he nevertheless produced emotional, spiritual, bigger than life music that was strangely out of sync with his own times. Guest artists Jim Bergwall, singers Christopher Bolduc, Kendra Colton, Suzanne DuPlantis, Randi Marrazzo, and Marquita Raley, and pianist Laura Ward. www.lyricfest.org

Then to Now
Arthur, an obscure young painter struggling in the art world of Manhattan, announces to his self satisfied friend, Howard, that he is engaged to be married. To whom? asks Howard. The answer is to Lucille, a powerful, attractive, no nonsense Texas socialite, a kind of wealthy Annie Oakley. But, Arthur confides to Howard, there are three problems: 1. Arthur is a fetishist and Lucille doesn’t know. He can not make love without being in proximity to his father’s argyle socks. 2. Arthur’s psychia trist, Dr. Block, unable to cure Arthur of his fetish, has stolen said socks. 3. Arthur’s wed ding night is fast approaching and he needs his socks back. “ ... a smart new comedy about men and their befuddlements and a shrink who may just be the personification of evil...The play’s first half is perfectly poised between daffy comedy and believable human neurosis which Shanley combines so well that although you never know what wacky thing is coming next, you believe it when it comes…”

Bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought pro voking, and alarmingly funny, Assassins is per haps the most controversial musical ever writ ten. This most American of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one act historical “revusical” that explores the dark side of the American experi ence. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assas sins and would be assassins from different his torical periods meet, interact, and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American Dream.
Then to Now is a retrospective concert, cele brating the past 10 years since the introduction of the annual fall faculty and guest artist series. The concert includes works by up and coming alumni choreographers, current WCU dance faculty, and guest artists, along with four select ed student choreographers.

tick…tick…BOOM! is the autobiographical tale of Jonathan Larson, a struggling, young com poser on the brink of turning 30 with his life seemingly going nowhere. He is waiting tables in a diner for a living and is desperately scared of a future without success. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city while his best friend sold out to make big bucks on Madison Avenue. Yet Jon is still try ing to write the great American musical. The shows takes you on the playwright/ composer’s journey that led to the creation of the Broadway blockbuster, Rent. Set in 1990, this traditional book musical is filled with instantly appealing melodies, and a unique blend of pop and musical theatre styles. Every one, regardless of age, will love this youthful, endearing, and thoughtful piece, and will sure ly embrace the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life’s most difficult chal lenges. The production is completely student designed and is directed by Andrew Lowy, who will graduate in 2009.

Morocco, a relatively tiny northwest corner of the African continent, seems untouched by time and yet is gradually moving through it. From humble mountain villages to luxurious riads, from the port cities of the western coasts to the forests of the Atlas mountains, from camel cara vans to the Paris to Dakar Road Race, a country and its enduring histo ry are revealed through the lens of Rick Ray, accomplished and much awarded journeyman filmmaker.
Canada, a dramatic land bounded by three seas and the sky, boasts extraordinary national parks. Skilled filmmaker Dale Johnson takes us through 21 of them, starting with L ’Anse aux Meadows Park in New foundland, where Vikings waded ashore a thousand years ago, and pro ceeding westward to the Pacific Rim and majestic, resplendent Kluane. Come and experience parts of this land that too few see sometimes wild, sometimes serene, always splendid!

Come hear the stories, and see the splendid scenic variety of these special places!

Monty and Marsha Brown
This is an enchanting historic journey from Solway Firth on the Irish Sea in Scotland to the North Sea coast of England, south through the Mid lands, the West Country, and across the Channel to France. From Irish sea to shining Mediterranean sea, stories and legends of the glorious past are written in stone: churches, castles, monuments, monoliths, and remnants and with their extraordinary camera expertise Marsha and Monty Brown bring it all to life for us!
John Wilson brings us a vivid portrait of a place where ancient traditions have never disappeared and gives an insider’s look at the rich rural culture of Tuscany. The photographer had exclusive access to the workshops, kitchens, and homes of the Tuscan people; the result is a program that reveals how the Tuscans themselves really live. It weaves compelling sto ries of master craftsmen and country cooks, ancient farmhouses and rus tic cheese makers, and a singularly beautiful landscape.
When noted travel filmmaker Dennis Burkhart set his sights on creating a travelogue about Hawaii, his goal was to capture the uniqueness of the vacation wonderland, going beyond the usual to sites seldom seen. We’ll spend time in the 11th century when the Polynesian explorers sailed the open seas in search of new lands, dive the coral reefs, visit the old whal ing town of Lahaina, and explore smaller, lesser known islands.

The Gondoliers or
The King of Barataria
November 20, 21 and 22, 8 p.m. November 22 and 23, 2 p.m. Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall When two red hot republican gondoliers learn that one of them is the long lost king of a Mediterranean island, they soon establish a decidedly egalitarian “people’s monarchy.” But the throne comes with a queen already in place, which is bad news for the gondoliers’ new brides. Add an impoverished duke cashing in on his upper class connections, toss in favorite songs and a cachuca dance, and you have one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s sunniest operettas. The libretto bubbles like cham pagne, and the warm Venetian setting of 1750 contains not only an English idiom but also borrows dances from France, Spain, and Italy. WCU students singing lead roles include Dan Moyer as Luiz, Ashley Ray as Gianetta, and Melissa Ferrari as Tessa. Emily Bullock, WCU professor of voice and opera, is cast as the Duchess of Plaza Toro. Recent WCU graduate Dalin Ulrich is Giulia. Other WCU students will appear in the chorus.
