There is no cost for this program, however space is limited. The training will be segmented by class type and will include a combination of class time and practical training. Attendance in group fitness classes is also expected. The Instructor Training Program will cover the foundations to teach a safe, effective and fun fitness class. Participants interested in applying to become a CRC group fitness instructor may complete a practical and written exam upon completion of the program. No prior teaching experience necessary, just a desire to become a leader in the fitness field! It is our mission to promote the development of healthy lifestyles, using bicycling as an attractive and sustainable mode of transportation for the University of Massachusetts Lowell community. We strive to accomplish this by providing high-quality cycling equipment and services that will encourage an environmentally friendly commute between campuses as well as throughout the city of Lowell. Rec-Cycles is a collaboration between the School of Health and Environment, University Facilities, and the Department of Campus Recreation & is a part of the Healthy Campus Initiative. To borrow a Rec-Cycle just come to the Campus Recreation Center with your UML ID to check out a bike, and away you go. Return the bike before the CRC closes for that day…It’s that simple!!! You could be UML’s Biggest Loser this year! If you are trying to lose weight or just want to live healthier, this 12-week challenge is for you! The monthly weigh-ins include weight, height, body fat percentage, waist & hip measurements, pre/post fitness assessments, & pre/post diet analysis are also available. Participation points will be awarded for weight loss, decreases in body fat percentage, improved hip & waist measurements, working out at the CRC, going to CRC group fitness classes, signing up for a personal trainer at the CRC, & participation in other CRC events & activities. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 students & the top 3 faculty/staff members that accumulate the most points over the 12-week program. Prizes for last year’s 2008 program included: 1st place-$200 Visa Gift Card, 2nd place-$100 Visa Gift Card, 3rd place-$50 Visa Gift Card. This 8-week program will run in both the fall & spring semesters. Ballroom Dance-This 8-week dance program is divided into 2 different classes: beginner & intermediate levels. The beginner class is designed to introduce you to some popular ballroom dance styles while the intermediate class is designed to challenge participants who have mastered the beginner class & the focus will be more on technique & the lead-follow relationship as new steps are explored. There will be a fall & spring session for both levels. Check out the CRC website to find out specific class times & program dates for the Hip Hop, Salsa & Ballroom Dance Programs. You may register for all instructional dance class at the CRC Welcome Desk. Program fees for all instructional dance programs are: Student Members: $25 Non-Students Members: $40 Non-Members: $55 Swimming Lessons-Adult and children's swimming lessons are offered through the CRC. Adult lessons are geared for beginners while the children's lessons are offered at a number of different ability levels. The spring & fall sessions will be held at Costello Gym Pool on Saturdays for 8 weeks. Each 8-week session costs $80. Racquetball Clinics-The CRC holds FREE beginner & intermediate racquetball clinics inside the CRC racquetball courts during the fall & spring semesters. SCUBA Lessons-The CRC offers several SCUBA classes, including an Open Water SCUBA Certification. This class includes 5 sessions that incorporate lecture, pool time, & open water dives. Teams that maintain the same name throughout the year will accumulate points as indicated below. At the conclusion of each school year, custom-made jackets & a trophy will be given to the team that accumulated the highest point total. For individual events & individual tournaments, players may donate their points to a team of their choice. The team with the most points will have the teams name engraved on the UML Intramural Cup for that year.
