Library Classification Systems

Most libraries use one of two classification systems: the Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) System or the Library of Congress (LC) Classification
System. Classification systems provide a way to organize the books and other
items found in a library. The Sullivan University Libraries use the Dewey Decimal
Classification system.

Which classification system is used at the library that you visited? (Please
indicate if you were not able to visit a library).

DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION EXERCISE

There are several ways to complete the following exercise. Please use the
approach which is best for you.
       • If you are visiting a library that uses Dewey Decimal Classification, you can go
to the appropriate area of the library to search for the answer.
       • If you cannot visit a library or if the library does not use Dewey Decimal
Classification, you can go to http://library.sullivan.edu/. Click the Info Literacy

next page, click the “War of the Words” link to play an online arcade game that
will help you complete the assignment. (Good luck!)
