EXHIBITION Feb. 21 through May 24, 2009 Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life Working in a small apartment in Bologna, Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) approached painting with the concentration of a Zen master. One of the most admired still-life painters of the 20th century, Morandi combined a subtlety of design with a meditative aura, infusing his still lifes of bottles, bowls, and jars with an unexpected intensity. Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life features some 50 paintings, many of which have never been seen in the United States. This exhibition is the first retrospective of Morandi’s work in Washington in half a century. PERMANENT COLLECTION Exhibited continuously Selections by European and American masters from the 19th century to the present are on display, including Edgar Degas, Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Gauguin, Paul Klee, Jacob Lawrence, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Maurice Prendergast, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent van Gogh. Museum admission: Feb. 1–20: weekends, $10 for adults, $8 for visitors 62 and over and students, free for members and visitors 18 and under; weekdays by donation. Poetic Voices: Hip Hop Here and Now African-American music and poetry have become a soundtrack for a migrating global audience searching for its character. Artist Fred Joiner moderates a panel of poet-scholars in a discussion of hip hop as a force that blends cultural identities with the realities of modern life. In collaboration with the American Poetry Museum. Once upon a Picture—Lawrence as Storyteller Explore how Jacob Lawrence’s use of patterns and bold colors tells the story of the Great Migration of African Americans to the North in the early 20th century.
