Construction

Corus has successfully delivered a
programme of Modular Platform extensions
at five stations: Aberdare, Cwmbach,
Fernhill, Penrhiwceiber and Abercynon North
on the Aberdare Branch in South Wales.
Corus’ scope included the design,
manufacture and installation of Modular
Platform extensions 50m long x 2.5m wide.

The Aberdare Branch in South Wales runs
from Abercynon North Junction to Aberdare.
The line from Aberdare to Cardiff and
Swansea serves as a commuter route and
was experiencing severe overcrowding at
peak times.
                                               New modular platform at Fernhill

The pre-existing platforms on the Aberdare Branch were generally capable of platforming two-
car stock. In order to increase passenger capacity on the Branch, the Welsh Assembly
Government, in conjunction with Arriva Trains Wales, proposed the introduction of four-car
stock, necessitating longer platforms. Corus’ modular solution offered significant benefits:
• weak and potentially unstable ground would have required extensive piling and
groundworks for conventional platform construction. Corus’ Modular Platform offered a
cost-effective solution that significantly reduced the extent of groundworks
• the rapid erection of the Modular System significantly reduced the overall duration of the
    platform extension programme
• the existing platforms on the Branch are generally not to standard horizontal and vertical
offsets. Corus’ design remit was to provide platforms to standard gauge. On the first day
of erection works, Corus was instructed to change the platform offsets to better match the
existing. The unique adjustability of Corus’ Modular Platform allowed these changes to be
accommodated with no impact on programme
• stageworks at Fernhill required that the platform be erected around existing infrastructure
(signals, etc.) with platform completion works being undertaken on completion of
interfacing infrastructure works. The modular platform solution met this need.

                                                        • Lightweight platform minimising
                                                             groundworks

                                                        • Inherent adjustability in platform
                                                             system allowed late changes to
platform gauge with no impact on
                                                             programme

                                                        • Turnkey service - design,
                                                             manufacture and installation

                                                        • Platform erection works completed
                                                             ahead of schedule
