CORPORATE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Back-to-School Supplies Drive
For the children living in our domestic violence shelters, going back to school can
cause great stress and anxiety. They left their possessions behind when they fled
from a violent home with their mother and now are living in an unfamiliar place.
To bring some normalcy back to the children’s lives, we strive to get a new
backpack and school supplies for each of the children in our shelters. You can
help by organizing a drive to collect school supplies and backpacks for one or all
of our shelters. Work with Safe Horizon staff to organize a small party at a
shelter and distribute the gifts to the children, or ship the backpacks to Safe
Horizon and we will distribute them.
Hospitality Kit Drive
New residents move into shelters every three months, so toiletry kits are always needed.
Designated volunteers have the option of assembling toiletry kits or donating bulk items.
If possible, full-size items are preferred. Plastic shopping bags are suggested. Items
needed include soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs/brushes, wash-cloths/towels,
deodorant, shampoo/conditioner, sanitary napkins, lotion, dental floss, shower caps,
toilet paper, razors, shaving gel, and cosmetics.
Hold a fun arts and crafts or educational/cultural workshop for the children and
families living in Safe Horizon domestic violence shelters. Volunteers will meet
with Safe Horizon staff to discuss workshop ideas and required materials.
Designated volunteers will purchase supplies (e.g., arts and crafts materials) and
coordinate delivery and set-up with Safe Horizon staff. Designated volunteers will
host the workshop, organize activities, and clean up afterwards.
Many shelter and program sites need backyard beautification as well as minor
renovations. Volunteers can beautify the backyard by providing patio
furniture as well as plants and gardening tools to create an area for clients to
relax and discuss their issues. Volunteers can also beautify the site by painting
the walls, creating murals or doing small renovation projects, such as
constructing additional storage space by purchasing and installing shelving.
Festive parties are a great way for volunteer groups to brighten a child’s season. Party
volunteer groups can choose to host a Halloween, Thanksgiving, Holiday, Mother’s
Day, or End-of-Year celebration. If you have other party ideas, please let us know! We
encourage volunteers to provide decorations and refreshments and organize activities for
the party. This is a great way to see first-hand how much your time and support mean to
the families we serve.
Toy Drives are always needed in our shelters and programs during the holiday
season. You can organize a drive in your office and deliver your toys to a Safe
Horizon program in early December. Another option: host a toy drive and party!
Volunteers can either choose a shelter (“Adopt a Shelter”) or one will be assigned
based on need. Volunteers will organize a toy drive for their shelter and plan a
shelter party centered around delivery of the toys collected.
