Month 5            The Royal College of Pathologists undertakes a mandatory registration process for all
                   trainees. Trainees must be registered with the College in order to undertake the year 1
                   assessment and multi-source feedback assessment (MSF).

2009               Trainees participate in this process by completing a self-rating form and nominating ten
                   assessors to rate them.

                   This peer-rating tool will be developed as part of the web-based system for workplace-based
                   assessment. Information and guidance will be notified separately.

Friday, 15 May     First opportunity for 2008-09 - Year 1 Chemical Pathology Assessment                            £175

                   This will be in the form of an Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE. It is for
                   chemical pathology trainees in Stage A of a PMETB approved training programme.

                   In order to apply for the assessment, trainees should normally, at the time of attempting the
                   assessment have satisfactorily completed a minimum of seven months whole-time equivalent
                   training and be on course to complete the requirements of the Stage A chemical pathology
                   curriculum.

                   There will be one venue for the first opportunity to sit the year 1 chemical pathology
                   assessment:

                   The closing date for applying for the first opportunity of the year 1 chemical pathology
                   assessment is 17 April 2009. The results will be available on 11 June 2009.

                   The guidance notes, application form and sample assessment questions are
                   available on the College website.

Monday, 14         Second opportunity for 2008-09 – Year 1 Chemical Pathology Assessment                         £175

2009               Please note:
                   This is applicable to trainees who
                   • attempted the year 1 assessment in May 2009 but failed to achieve the required
                       standard.
                   • began their training after 16 October 2008 (for whom this will be the first opportunity).

                   Trainees will have two opportunities in any one year of training to attempt and achieve a
                   successful outcome in the year 1 assessment. If they are unsuccessful it is up to their
                   Deanery to consider, within arrangements of the ARCP, the case for additional training.
                   Trainees are unable to exit Stage A of training and proceed to Stage B unless they have
                   achieved a successful outcome in the year 1 assessment.

                   The venue for the second opportunity of the year 1 chemical pathology assessment is:

1    March 2009                   During March, the College/LEPT system will ask trainees to start seeking
                                  permission from potential assessors so that they can meet the following deadlines
                                  for the multi-source feedback (MSF) assessment.

                                  Trainees must be registered with the College in order to apply for the MSF.

2    Six months after start       Mid-year reviews to be conducted with trainees.

3    w/c 30 March 2009            Trainees to log-in to the LEPT system so that they can complete and submit their
                                  MSF online forms and nominate assessors.
     Good Friday = 10 April
     Easter Monday = 13 April     At least six from the first four categories –
                                  • Consultant chemical pathologists
                                  • Consultant clinical scientists
                                  • Consultant physicians
                                  • Grade B clinical scientists
                                  • Senior biomedical scientists
                                  • Nursing staff
                                  • Pharmacists
                                  • Medical secretaries (optional, no more than one)
                                  Educational supervisors must also approve the list of assessors within this
                                  timescale.
4    22 April 2009                Closing date for trainees to complete and submit their online forms.
5    11 May 2009                  Closing date for assessors to submit their online rating forms.

                                  The first opportunity of the year 1 OSPE assessment will take place on 15 May
                                  2009. The 11 May closing date for MSF will ensure that any reported trainee
                                  performances on the year 1 assessment will not influence the assessors’ ratings.
6    w/c 8 June 2009              MSF feedback available.
                                  The feedback will coincide well with the results of the first opportunity of the year 1
                                  assessment which will be available on 11 June 2009.
7    Exact dates to be            Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)
     confirmed
                                  The educational supervisor’s structured reports (incorporating outcomes of
                                  workplace-based assessments, MSF and the year 1 assessment) should be written
                                  and agreed with the trainee.
                                  The ARCP panel should have the educational supervisor’s structured report to
                                  enable decision-making regarding trainees’ progression to Stage B of training.

8    14 September 2009            Second opportunity of the year 1 assessment.

9    There will be an opportunity for trainees to undergo a repeated MSF assessment.
