Site Visit: “Logistics Excellence at the Port of Hamburg”

7:30 Transfer from Heiligendamm to the Port of Hamburg

10:00-13:00 Case Study “Port logistics automation at the Container Terminal Altenwerder”

The Altenwerder terminal is regarded worldwide as
„state-of-the-art“. The degree of automation is unique.
Advanced technology and innovative IT systems ensure
rapid and efficient transhipment. This produces competitive
advantages, with ship lay times shrinking and containers
  being delivered more quickly.

Loading and discharging of containerships is performed
semi-automatically by twin-trolley container bridges. The
rail-mounted gantry cranes and the unmanned trucks (AGV)
used to shift containers between the quay and the storage
area are also software-controlled. Automated handling
guarantees continued operation at low cost.

In a first step, the container terminal Altenwerder will be visited in a site tour. In a second step, the IT department of the Port
of Hamburg will offer the opportunity to get an insider’s look into the details of the underlying IT systems. Due to the
interactivity of this session, there is enough time to discuss specific questions.

14:30-16:00 Case Study “Port logistics excellence at the Distribution Centre Altenwerder”

HHLA Rhenus Logistics is a joint venture between the largest
company in the ocean port sector in Germany HHLA and
the full-service logistics specialist Rhenus Logistics. Their
initial distribution centre offers already access to all forms of
transportation: truck, rail, ship and even airfreight transpor-
tation is available within a short time span. The brand new
state-of-the art logistics centre (LZA) will be opened in
November 2006 and is built on the premises directly behind
the Container Terminal Altenwerder (HHLA CTA). The additio-
nal location provides short transportation distances between
all container terminals of the port of Hamburg.

There, we will have the opportunity to experience port
logistics excellence with an emphasis on:
  - Interconnectedness with the partners
  - System oriented process optimisation
  - Supply chain integration

Facilitator: Michael Schirmaier, Managing Director, HHLA Rhenus Logistics, Germany
