Die casting involves putting molten metal under high pressure into mold cavities. Die
castings are generally made of non-ferrous metals like zinc, copper, aluminum,
magnesium, lead, and tin based alloys, though ferrous metal die castings are also
possible. Die casting method is especially good when a large quantity of small and
medium seized parts is required.

Die casting products are considered among the highest volume products made in the
metalworking industry.

The major die casting alloys include: zinc, aluminum, magnesium, copper, lead, and tin.
Specific dies casting alloys include:

• Zinc: the easiest alloy to cast; highly flexible and high impact strength

• Aluminum: light in weight; high dimensional stability

• Magnesium: good strength-to-weight ratio; light alloy that is commonly die cast.

• Copper: high hardness; high corrosion resistance; and good dimensional stability

• Lead and Tin: high density; extremely close dimensional accuracy

There are two basic types of die casting machines: hot-chamber machines and cold-
chamber machines.
