(OES) is a member of the Energy Savings Group, a Canadian organization and one of the largest energy suppliers in North America. OES provides residential and business customers with natural gas and electricity Price Protection Programs that reduce their exposure to fluctuating energy prices, offering peace of mind from volatile energy prices and the ability to budget more effectively. Energy commodity prices are among the most unpredictable, fluctuating with changes in supply and demand. Will enrolling with OES affect my relationship with my utility? You will remain a customer of your utility for services including meter reading, transmission, transportation (except Union South customers), distribution and billing under one bill. Your utility will remain committed to the safe and reliable delivery of energy to your home or business. If you choose to purchase electricity or natural gas from your utility, the price will vary with the market conditions and differences between your paid price and the actual cost of the commodity will be trued up* at a later date. When you enroll with OES for your electricity commodity supply, you may receive a credit or may be required to pay a settlement amount to cover any positive or negative amounts and you may not be eligible for any equal billing program your utility may have. *For electricity, this is only applicable to customers on the Regulated Price Plan. Why should consumers be concerned about price volatility? In the short term, cold weather can increase the demand for natural gas home heating. A colder than expected winter reduces the amount of natural gas in storage to unanticipated levels, causing decreases in available supply. How does OES balance my electricity account? OES purchases electricity for its customers based on their expected usage. Differences between expected usage and the actual amount of electricity used by OES customers are covered through the purchase or sale of electricity at the prevailing wholesale price. Any charges or credits resulting from this balancing are passed through to the pool of customers that are balanced together. By balancing electricity usage in pools, rather than on an individual basis, Ontario Energy Savings is proud to balancing volatility may be minimized. present our Green Energy Option! In the long term, sustained economic growth may cause an increase in demand as more houses are built, commercial users increase activity, and more natural gas is required by electricity generators to meet electricity demand. When oil prices increase, industrial users and power generators may switch from oil to natural gas, increasing demand. How will Green Energy affect my bill? You will continue to receive one bill from your utility. Your commodity charge and Green Energy Option charge will be summarized in one line on your bill. With each Green Energy unit you purchase, approximately 20% of your household electricity supply will be produced by green energy sources. By being more energy aware, you could cut your household’s emissions by up to 30%, saving both money and the planet. The average Canadian household generates the equivalent of 10 garbage bags of carbon emissions each day from all direct and indirect sources, including gas and electric utilities, transportation, food production and other household services. Let’s do what we can to help reduce these emissions and potential dangerous effects on our world. (Excerpt taken from “A Small Steps Guide to a Greener Planet” from www.canhydro.com) When oil prices are high, energy companies may invest heavily in oil drilling, instead of natural gas production, which can decrease natural gas supply. As North America’s natural gas market is integrated across Canada and the United States, interruption to production in the U.S., such as that of 2005’s active hurricane season, decreases supply for both American and Canadian consumers.
