              Auto and Truck Seasonal Adjustment

SEASONAL FACTORS FOR NEW DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN AUTO UNIT SALES HAVE BEEN RECALCULATED
FOR JANUARY 1999 THROUGH JULY 2003. SEASONAL FACTORS FOR LIGHT AND HEAVY TRUCK UNIT SALES
HAVE BEEN RECALCULATED FOR JANUARY 1999 THROUGH JULY 2003. THE SEASONAL FACTORS FOR AUTO
UNIT SALES AND LIGHT TRUCK UNIT SALES ARE PRODUCED BY THE FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD (FRB) AND
INCORPORATE IMPROVED ADJUSTMENTS OF REPORTED DATA TO A CALENDAR MONTH BASIS.

The following tables provide unit data on unadjusted and seasonally adjusted auto and truck sales,
domestic auto production, Canadian and Mexican auto imports, auto exports, and domestic auto inventories.
Data for most sales series are shown from January 1967 through July 2003;
all other series are available from January 1997 through July 2003.
Series will be updated as new data become available.

Seasonally adjusted auto and truck sales data, and seasonally adjusted auto
inventories are used in the preparation of estimates of the personal
consumption expenditures (PCE), private fixed investment (PFI), and
change in private inventories (CIPI) components of gross domestic product
(GDP), which are produced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) as
part of the national income and product accounts (NIPA's).

Sales estimates (PCE and PFI) for new cars and trucks are prepared using unit sales,
allocations by sector, and estimates of average expenditure per vehicle;
for annual estimates of new truck sales through 1996 and new car sales through 1992, manufacturers' shipments data are use
Further information on the use of auto unit sales in the preparation of PCE estimates can be found in U.S. Department of Comm
Bureau of Economic Analysis, Personal Consumption Expenditures, Methodology Paper Series MP-6 (1990).
CIPI estimates for new domestic autos are prepared using unit inventories and an estimate of average inventory value.

Note that unadjusted auto and truck sales are shown in tenths of thousands.
To obtain the exact quantity of vehicles sold contact the relevant data source listed below. 1/ 2/

at least one major manufacturer does not report until the third working day.
Truck sales (light and heavy) are generally available several days after the auto
sales. Auto production and inventories are available by the end of the second
