WHAT IS THE CDBG PROGRAM?
CDBG is a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The purpose of the CDBG Program is to benefit low to moderate income households by developing viable communities which include decent housing and a suitable living environment and expanded economic opportunities. To meet these objectives HUD provides “blocks” of monies to state and local communities that may be spent on specified activities. The city of Las Vegas accepts applications for CDBG funds from eligible non-profit organizations with IRS tax exempt status that are registered with the State of Nevada and who operate within the City limits. Applications are accepted from 501(c)(3) or (4) tax exempt status non-profit organizations only during the open application period each year. Public hearings and meetings are the primary means by which individual citizens are able to provide input into the CDBG Program. All such meetings are scheduled in advance and posted in the community. A 24-member board, appointed by the Mayor and Council, review CDBG applications and make recommendations for funding. This advisory board includes representatives from local communities, as well as advocates for the homeless, the disabled, representatives from various minority communities, and professionals from development, real estate, and banking.
