To be defensible, a secondary school program must be based on the special needs of the gifted adolescent. (Feldhusen) Much depends on breadth and inspirational quality of the enrichment program because the gifted need exposure to a variety of opportunities to avoid being locked into an area of specialization too early in life. (Tannenbaum) All enrichment must incorporate an honest and sincere desire of the student to pursue a particular topic or activity of his or her own choosing. (Renzulli) Learning should emanate from the interests and activities of the students. (Piaget) Gifted Specialist and advanced class teachers consult and collaborate in these areas: ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ Concept-based units Differentiated learning activities Demonstration teaching Including — Simulations, panel discussions, debates, literary circles, Socratic seminars, learning centers, etc. Huntsville City Schools Special Education 200 White Street Huntsville, Alabama 35801 Phone: 256-428-6872 Fax: 256-428-6871 E-mail: asledge@hsv.k12.al.us Email: lzb@hsv.k12.al.us
