In the most recent USDA report on hunger, Oregon ranked number one in food insecurity with hunger[1]. Within Oregon, Klamath County ranked number one in food insecurity with hunger[4]. 68% of households in Klamath County experience at least some food insecurity while 20% of children in Klamath County experience constant food insecurity[2]. More than three quarters of households in Klamath Falls live below what the federal government has established as the poverty line[2]. One third of households in Klamath County live on less than 50% of the poverty line[2].
Hungry children get sick more often[3]. Hungry children have higher rates of iron deficiency anemia and serious ear infections[3]. Hungry children are hospitalized more frequently[3]. Hungry children miss more school days and are less prepared when they do attend[3].
