RNC Association Makes Presentation to Pre-Budget Consultations
For immediate release: January 11, 2005 (St. John’s, NL) – Tim Buckle, President of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association (RNCA) today made a presentation on behalf of the RNCA to the Pre-Budget Consultations sponsored by the Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, Honourable Loyola Sullivan. President Buckle, while noting with appreciation the investments made in policing as part of the 2004 Budget, offered an emotional history lesson about the neglect the RNC has suffered in the past. Referring to the mural in the lobby of the Confederation Building that depicts an RCMP officer being welcomed by three members of the armed services, President Buckle observed, “Nowhere in this painting of proud moments in Newfoundland history will you find a member of the original Constabulary. I hope you will ponder that image the next time you pass through the entrance…” President Buckle went on to stress the need for adequate and effective funding for the RNC in order to support growing demands for policing and public safety services. He also emphasized that the RNCA has long supported the need for clear and reliable policing standards for Newfoundland and Labrador. “The RNCA has conducted a great deal of research into this area and has submitted detailed briefing materials to Justice Minister Tom Marshall for his consideration,” said Buckle. He also indicated that the Commission of Inquiry being conducted by former Chief Justice Antonio Lamer would very likely recommend that policing standards be introduced within the Province. President Buckle indicated that the RNCA is eager to work with the Government to develop policing standards for the betterment of public safety in the Province. - 30 For more information, please contact: Tim Buckle President, RNC Association (709) 739-5946 or (709) 691-1516
