With increasing population and energy consumption, coupled with concerns about climate
change, safety and cost issues with nuclear power, and finite oil and gas resources, most
countries in the world are planning significant increases in their use of wind and solar power.
The talk will review some of the basic physics of solar and wind power and then deal with
recent research by Peter Taylor’s group at York University on site-specific wind energy
resource assessment and wind forecasting. A major theme here is atmospheric boundary-
layer flow in complex terrain involving flow over changes in surface roughness and flow
