Women are Always Making History
- A Swatch of Biographical MaterialKimberly Wulfert, PhD - a quilt maker since the 1970s & she began studying antique quilts in 1990. She was a practicing psychologist, but as her interest in quilt history grew, she started teaching and writing articles and a column for Traditional QuiltWorks Magazine about dating antique quilts. She started her educational quilt history website in 2001; voted one of the best websites in 2004 by Australia’s Patchwork & Quilting. Kim teaches nationally for guilds, seminars and museums. She toured groups through the Northeastern states to teach them about textile history and our quilting heritage, past and present. She has curated antique quilt exhibits for California museums, and loaned hers for national exhibits. In 2007 she published Antique Quilt Dating Guides...by Style, quick Guides for dating quilts in auctions or while shopping. As a quilt maker, a few of her contemporary quilts have won ribbons, and a reproduction quilt was included in a traveling challenge quilt exhibit. Kim’s ongoing research is on the life and times of John Hewson, America’s finest 18th century textile chintz printer/dyer, published in fine magazines about American antiques. She wrote the e-book Threading Your Research Needle, a how-to guide for beginning researchers and teaches workshops on the subject. There is more information and photos of her quilts, new and old, on her two websites. Groups with a specific interest can request a customized program or workshop. Half day, one and two day dating workshops are available; those listed here are one day workshops.

“An old-time quilt maker used a needle as often, as easily, as casually as we use a telephone: it was her duty, her comfort, her companion, her mode of self expression. ” (Quilts in America, pg. 149, P. & M. Orlofsky) “ I did get an eyeless needle one time. No, it wasn’t a headless pin. It had an eye dent. Come to think of it, batting has body, thread has weight, fabric has a hand, dye bleeds, machines hum, and quilters have the smarts to make them all work together.” (A Quilt Historian Looks at Sewing Needles, K. Wulfert) These quotes are from my article online www.historyofquilts.com/needle.html
