Pennsylvania Bar Association WOMEN IN THE PROFESSION ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Pennsylvania Bar Association WOMEN IN THE PROFESSION 14th ANNUAL CONFERENCE: “WOMEN FOR WOMEN” Thursday, June 21, 2007 • Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m. Women in the Profession Business and Breakfast Meeting Commission Co-chairs: Phyllis Horn Epstein and Dana Baiocco 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. WIP “Proven Strategies for Successfully Managing the Demands of a Law Practice and Personal Life CLE #314 Data from both inside and outside Pennsylvania reflect that, while women are hired and compensated at levels commensurate with men at the inception of their legal careers, they tend to leave the profession or move to lower-paying positions after about 4-5 years in practice — at about the time they begin a family. The data also indicate that a powerful driver of this phenomenon is a perceived inability to balance the competing demands of firm and family. Presented by prominent women lawyers, this seminar shares practical tips on how to achieve success in the practice of law while maintaining a satisfying life outside the firm. State and federal employment laws that govern such issues as parttime work, flexible work hours, working from home and other “family-friendly” employment practices will be addressed. What is one skill they all have? The ability to communicate effectively and forge powerful relationships. These skills are essential to professional success. Strong leaders build upon their natural strengths and comfort zones to develop the skills and strategies that enable them to communicate effectively and craft strong, effective relationships. These interrelated skills are the building blocks for success. In this interactive workshop, Karen B. Kahn of KM Advisors teaches today’s busy, strong, independent woman how to enhance her interpersonal communication skills and expand the nature of her relationships in order to achieve greater success on the job and at home. Karen offers concepts, strategies and practical tools for communicating more effectively in the courtroom and boardroom, with clients and peers, and more personally, with family and friends.
