Pediatricians and Communities Collaborating Together (PACCT) THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO NAVAL MEDICAL CENTER, SAN DIEGO “I believe that my profession needs a shift of emphasis. Pediatrics is a primary care specialty that must be communityoriented and community based. Thus, training programs must instill in today's pediatrician the need to develop a longterm commitment to the community concerns, so as to be better prepared to impact on children's health at the community level. Only by such a shift of focus can the well-being of all America's children be improved.” - Anne E. Resident Michael Epperly talks to students at Hoover High School. Center for Child Protection developed a two-week Family Violence Rotation to educate and expose residents to the multiple aspects of family violence. Cultural Immersion Days To help the resident deliver the highest level of culturally effective care, PACCT developed “immersion days.” The half day experience occurs on a quarterly basis and consists of trips to communities throughout San Diego and Tijuana. The experiences are designed to educate the residents through unique interactions with community members. The Longitudinal Experience During the Community Pediatric Rotation, the residents develop two deliverable projects focusing on community pediatrics and family violence. To help residents hone skills as advocates for children and families, they are encouraged to select a culture, community, or agency with which to develop a long-term relationship for the remainder of their residency.
