People
The Haas Alumni Network’s mission is to engage alumni in the advancement of the Haas School of Business and, in turn, to provide superior opportunities for personal and professional growth through a lifetime connection to Haas and to one another.
HAN is a network of people…
The Haas Alumni Network (HAN) has over 32,000 alumni worldwide with volunteer coordinators in 41 countries and 31 USA locations (and growing!). All degree holders, current students, and faculty are automatically considered members of HAN. Through your Haas alumni connections, you will interact with influential, intelligent, and dynamic individuals who will change your life and expand your thinking. One of the main benefits of HAN is the people you meet. Be a part of the network; take advantage of it. To tap into your network, make use of these resources provided by HAN:
Haas@Cal: haas.berkeley.edu/alumni

Lifelong Learning
HAN is a network of ideas…
HAN is committed to offering seminars and workshops that allow you to continue your intellectual and professional growth beyond your time on campus as a student. Haas will help you stay on top of current business practices, trends, and new ideas. Through HAN you have access to:
Haas alumni have access to the following lifelong learning activities: There are 21 regional HAN chapters and 51 representatives world-wide. Each HAN chapter board works to bring their regional area a diverse set of programs and workshops ranging from career management and advancement to investing in today’s market. In most regions, all the top business school alumni associations share event invitations, so you have the opportunity to cross-network with those alumni groups as well. Local events are publicized through regional email lists and the Haas School web calendar. Here are a few examples of speaker events: • The HAN Orange County Chapter hosted panel discussions on, “The Financial Tsunami”, and, “Green meets Green”. • In Chicago, the upscale housewares company of a Haas alum was the venue for a Chapter wine tasting. • Dean Lyons joined alumni receptions in Shanghai & Hong Kong. • In New York, industry focused “Supper Clubs” connect Haas alumni who share common professional backgrounds. A relatively new effort by the Alumni Relations office has been to support and organize the creation of “vertical” programming by industry or affinity. Several of these groups are active and have events and professional opportunities shared on their email lists. Here is a list of the current HAN Affinity/Industry Group: • Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association • Berkeley Digital Media & Entertainment Club • Berkeley-Columbia Alumni Chapter • Biotech Alumni • Diversity Alumni • Energy Alumni • Entrepreneurial Alumni • Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual and Transgender Alumni • Health Management Alumni Association • Real Estate (BREA) Alumni • South Asian MBA Association (SAMBAA) • Venture Capital Alumni

MBA Alumni: Audit MBA Classes at Haas
MBA alumni are invited to participate in a course audit program in the fall and spring semesters. HAN announces the course offerings available from the Full-time MBA, Evening/Weekend MBA, or Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA program at the beginning of each semester by email and through eHAN, the Haas online alumni newsletter. During the registration period, there are specific policies and procedures outlining the pertinent details and registration information. Unfortunately, the Haas School cannot guarantee you a place in any of these classes; alumni will be admitted only after current students have made their course selections and only if there is still space available in these classes. This is a complimentary service.
Publications
eHAN: The bi-weekly alumni e-newsletter about school news, campus highlights, upcoming events, and alumni spotlights. Update your profile in Haas@Cal and make sure your preferred email address is listed in order to receive this by email. CMR publishes a quarterly journal full of articles that are both research-based and address issues of current concern to managers. CMR emphasizes three areas of critical importance to both practicing managers and academic researchers: Strategy and Organization, Global Competition and Competitiveness, and Business and Public Policy. CMR focuses on contemporary developments in the global economy, strategies for innovation, strategic planning, the management of technology, corporate culture, managing human resources, and business ethics. All Haas graduates are eligible to subscribe to CMR at the special alumni rate of $40 for domestic and $60 for international by going to CMR’s website: http://cmr.berkeley.edu

Haas@Work
Haas@Work is one of the experiential learning exercises developed as part of the Haas School’s Leading Through Innovation strategy. The experience will help develop Berkeley MBA students’ distinctive capabilities and will give them a firsthand opportunity to work closely with companies in solving their business challenges. Innovation is about fresh ideas being put to work, and Haas@Work is about applied innovation. At the one-day workshops, students from both the Full-time and Evening Weekend MBA programs separate into sub-teams focusing on different opportunities to address companies’ priorities. Each team consists of about ten Berkeley MBA students, two company employees, and a trained Haas@ Work facilitator. Each sub-team then presents recommendations to company executives. At the workshop’s conclusion, the companies Executives review the teams’ recommendations and select one or more for a smaller Haas implementation team to pursue their ideas. Students are selected to join the implementation team based on their workshop performance and enroll in the new “Seminar in Applied Innovation” course. Through Haas@Work, students gain exposure to corporate executives and the opportunity to work collaboratively on an actionable business challenge. 4

1. Haas School Board: Senior Executives are nominated to serve on the School’s Board to assist the Dean with curriculum planning and fundraising. 2. HAN Alumni Council: Volunteers are dedicated to creating and continuing lifelong relationships between the school and its graduates throughout the alumni community. The HAN Alumni Council plays a critical role in helping to shape the programs and services offered to alumni and also advise in such areas as communications, continuing education, chapter development, student outreach, and fundraising. 3. HAN Regional Chapter Boards: Volunteers in a certain region meet to plan events and develop a local HAN network. New ideas and new volunteers are always welcome in all of our regional chapter networks. 4. HAN Affinity/Industry Group Leaders: Volunteers from a particular Industry meet to plan events and develop an industry based HAN Network. 5. HAN Regional Representative: In regions of the world where we have fewer alumni residing, a key Haas ambassador serves as our local HAN Representative. Regional Representatives serve as a contact for prospective students, new alumni, and faculty traveling through the region. Over time, as more alumni move to this region, chapters are often developed. 6. Haas Development Council: The Haas Annual Fund is supported by an active and dedicated group of fundraising volunteers representing all programs and graduation years. These individuals serve as important ambassadors for the school as reunion, class gift, and regional committee members. Their leadership and commitment are vital components of our annual giving program. The Haas Development Council has members in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and New York. 7. Class Gift Committee: Volunteers work together with their classmates to increase the participation of giving by all members of the class to the Haas Annual Fund. Haas fundraising volunteers play a key role in facilitating peer to peer contact among classmates, which fosters ties between fellow students, alumni and Haas, raises awareness about the importance of alumni support to the school, and secures gifts. Through annual gifts to the Haas Annual Fund, we gain the flexibility to provide critical resources that directly benefit our students, faculty, and alumni. 8. Class Reunion Committee: In honor of their reunion, members of the class work together to inspire their classmates to make a gift to the School and to attend their class reunion festivities. 9. Responsibilities of Haas Fundraising Volunteers • Set an example by making your own personal contribution at an appropriate level early in the fundraising year. The Haas School expects 100% giving participation from its fundraising volunteer leaders. • Partner with Haas staff to establish and achieve annual fundraising goals. • Inform your classmates of the many ways the Haas School is maintaining its excellence – and also the impact gifts from alumni are having each year. • Respond to questions from your fellow graduates.

Donate: Give Back Your Treasure
It may surprise you to learn that the Haas School receives less than 20% of its budget from the state of California, and more than 80% of its budget comes from other sources, including private support from alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations. Our school is actually state-supported rather than state-funded. Each year, thousands of alumni and friends contribute gifts to the Haas Annual Fund and here are just a few examples of the ways in which those contributions are put to work: • Increasing alumni outreach and networking programs and services • Providing equipment and services for the Haas Computer Center and classrooms • Extending hours of the Long Library for evening access • Support for Faculty research funds and curriculum development • For other examples of your gifts in action, go to: haas.berkeley.edu/alumni/giving. This is a participation campaign for our alumni to help Haas raise the bar to increase its participation rates and endowment levels in order to be competitive with our colleagues around the country. Did you know that participation rates are one of the important ways that we compare ourselves to our peer institutions? • Our goal for our Undergraduate participation rate to the Annual Fund is to increase to 0% in FY 08/09 (Michigan 15%) • Our goal for our MBA participation rate to the Annual Fund is to increase to 20% in FY 08/09 (UCLA 21%, Michigan 21%, Duke 26%, Columbia 25%, Virginia 35%, and privates Stanford 37%, Harvard 30%) • Our goal is to raise $0 Million in new endowed funds every year (Stanford has $500 Million in endowment compared to Haas $200 Million) For more information and to see the Dean Lyon’s video presentation, please view this website: 10-10-20.haas.berkeley.edu.
