EXCERPTS FROM THE ARCHIVE
Reflections on the future of the written word. The decline of the printed word has been a matter of concern for decades… “The development of gramophones, broadcasting and television, or a combination of any two or all three of them, may eventually abolish the book except as a curiosity.” (1932) Many researchers would have welcomed remote access… “Professor Joseph Wright of Oxford will be remembered by his dictionary of the English language, but I understand that he only entered the Bodleian Library once in his life, when he was moving to a new house and wished to see samples of wall-paper.” (1932) Lord Avebury would have embraced powerful search tools… “My friends are good enough to read new books for me, and give me the result. This saves a great deal of time, and makes my reading much more interesting.” (1906) All excerpts taken from The Library – Transactions of the Bibliographical Society

The mysterious powers of hypnosis have long been pondered by scientists… “Intelligent people, and those with strong wills, are more easily hypnotisable than the dull, the stupid, or the weak-willed. Forel says the most difficult to influence are without doubt the insane.” Brain (1896) Concerns about students’ drinking habits are nothing new… “At the end of the fourth week of the Spring Term 1982, 734 female and 754 male undergraduates at Oxford University were sent a questionnaire inquiring about their alcohol consumption. Of the 561 women and 522 men who replied, 80% and 85% respectively had drunk alcohol during the previous four days. The mean consumption over the four days was 8 units for women and 15 units for the men.” Alcohol and Alcoholism (1984)

Courtship and cars: is there a link? “The area of man’s courtship has always been limited by the distance he could travel after early supper, spend as much time as possible with his lady love, and return, unobserved before daylight. Primitive man had to walk. Then came the saddle-horse, next the horse and buggy, then the automobile, and now it is the airplane. In time the humblest man’s range of courtship will include the entire feminine population of the globe.” The Journal of Heredity (1939) DNA profiling: will it prevent disease? “Biology is likely to receive the greatest advantage from the Human Genome Project as all of the phenomena of human growth, development and ageing are genetically based.” Molecular Human Reproduction (1995)

EXCERPTS FROM THE SOCIAL SCIENCES ARCHIVE
Should names of political donors be made public? The debate has a long history. In 1948 a Labour politician skirts around the topic… “I have given a broad picture of the finances of the Labour Party. I believe I am right in saying that no other party issues a public annual report.” A Conservative evades the issue… “This question has been discussed in the House of Commons in the past and has come to nothing-partly, at any rate, because of the difficulty of defining a political party.” The Liberals say ‘yes’… “Most Liberals would answer with an unqualified “Yes”. Not only have liberals nothing to lose by publicity, but there is everything to be gained, from the public point of view.” All excerpts taken from Parliamentary Affairs (1948)

KEY FACTS • Spans 35 years of knowledge • Content from 1960 – 1995 • 10 journals • Over 50,000 pages • Topics covered include medical, environmental, and refugee law
The Law Archive enhances current understanding by enabling researchers to track changes in knowledge and opinion over four decades. As well as important papers in legal studies and international law this archive also encompasses niche areas from human rights to medical and environmental law.
Refugee law has contributed to political debates for decades… “The role for refugee law – and thus for this Journal – is to provide a humane and humanitarian alternative in the midst of today’s political realities; one that recognizes the inherent dignity and integrity of every individual, and that offers a principled way towards solutions for those in flight.” International Journal of Refugee Law (1989) Studies showed that a rugged appearance might not signify deviant character after all… “Tattooed men were more intelligent. They were also significantly less prone to psychotic interludes.” British Journal of Criminology (1969) At last - abolition of the death penalty in Britain… “It is almost exactly a hundred years since a Royal Commission had recommended the abolition of public executions in Britain; it is almost a hundred years since the death penalty had been abolished in – for instance – Portugal. So is progress made.” British Journal of Criminology (1966)

EXCERPTS FROM THE HUMANITIES ARCHIVE
Every generation can find change hard to handle, as these excerpts show. Divorce… “A question often arises amongst clergymen of the present day, as to how the condition of a woman, who has been divorced and is married again, should be described in the parish register. “Single woman” is the only appropriate description I can suggest; and yet this is so invidious that I fear it would not be very generally acceptable.” Notes and Queries (1860) Television… “A menace to the mental health of the younger generation.” Mind (1952) Technology versus religion… “And it will make all the difference in the world whether we believe that the ultimate reality is the sphere of the True, the Good and the Beautiful, or that it is the sphere of television-sets, big motor cars and refrigerators.” Essays in criticism (1951)

WHAT DIGITAL PRESERVATION ARRANGEMENTS DO OXFORD JOURNALS HAVE TO ENSURE CONTENT IS AVAILABLE FOR THE LONG-TERM? Oxford Journals has signed 2 key archiving agreements with Portico and Koninklijke Bibliotheek (the National Library of the Netherlands), and in 2005 became a member of the LOCKSS preservation initiative from Stanford University. These agreements mean that we will be preserving not only an exact copy of journal content, but also ensuring the usability of the archived content over time by migrating the files to future file formats.
