Take Our Kids To Work
Wednesday November 5, 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians of Grade 9 Students:
The Surrey School Board, in cooperation with The Learning Partnership, business, labour, and the
community, is proud to offer Grade 9 students the opportunity of participating in Take Our Kids To Work
day.
Take Our Kids To Work day allows thousands of Grade 9 students across Canada to go to work with a
parent, relative, or adult friend for a job shadow activity. Students who are unable to accompany a parent,
relative, or adult friend to their workplace will be matched, if possible, with a volunteer host.
The primary objective of Take Our Kids To Work day is to link classroom learning with the workplace and
to enhance students’ understanding of the jobs in their community. It allows students to see their parents in
different roles and to help them understand what their parents do to support a family. For the community, it
emphasizes that education goes beyond the classroom and that the preparation of younger generations is a
community responsibility.
Classroom activities before and after the job shadow day will help students not only prepare for the
experience, but also reflect and build on it. Students will gain the background information they may need to
further discuss, analyze, and plan for their career interests.
Workplaces may be provided with a guide to help the employer make the day meaningful for both students
and employees. A day at work will demonstrate the relevance of classroom lessons to students and adults.
The project provides companies with an opportunity to showcase their work and to connect with members
of tomorrow’s workforce. Employees can demonstrate how they work and the skills they require to work
effectively.
It is important to note that:
It is up to students/parents/employers to arrange the job shadow placements, and students must
have their parent’s/guardian’s permission to participate;
Take Our Kids To Work is a job shadow hands-off activity, not work experience. Since this is not
considered a school-arranged work placement, there is no WorkSafeBC coverage provided to
participating students;
The parent/guardian who participate in this activity are responsible for the safety of their child
while at the workplace.
We encourage parents/guardians to read the Parent’s Brochure to assist with
preparing for Take Our Kids to Work and the information on the website
