As a result of recent US legislation and the technological developments of the digital age, automated enforcement programs have grown dramatically. Throughout the nation, more and more law enforcement agencies are recognizing the benefits of automated enforcement for such things as tollbooth fare evasion, speed enforcement and red-light violations. These programs have been demonstrated to be cost-effective traffic safety and educational tools. The efficiency and accuracy of automated enforcement frees up valuable police resources and provides the public with objective, observable evidence of violations. Most importantly, automated enforcement programs also have been shown to reduce traffic collisions and increase driver awareness. The automated enforcement system currently used by the Los Angeles Police Department has several features that guard against these types of countermeasures. The dual digital video captures not one but several high-resolution images of both the front and rear of the vehicle. If the strobe frame is overexposed, there is a good chance that another video frame will have a legible plate.
