Coleago’s Approach to Model Development
Our approach to model development combines our deep sector and technical knowledge of the telecommunications market with best-in-class business modelling expertise. As members of our consulting team have held operational roles in leading telecoms operators we ensure that our model solutions are practical and focus on the key issues facing the business. We begin by developing a deep understanding of the client’s business problem and discuss the outline structure of a model solution. Then we prepare a detailed model specification and pro-forma reports and outputs which are then agreed with the client to ensure the outputs from the model will match their expectations. The modelling work then commences using best practice model structure and design and a range of innovative modelling solutions. Progress updates are provided regularly so the client can review the development of their model. When a beta version of the model is ready Coleago performs an inhouse peer review, audit and testing before releasing the model to the client for beta testing. Coleago provides the model user with training into the use of the tool and works alongside them to being populating the model. Following feedback from the user testing phase Coleago will make any final adjustments and amendments to the model before releasing the final version. Coleago will then provide on-going remote user support for a further 6 months.

Example Modelling Projects
Coleago has developed models for short term, detailed budgeting, strategic War Games, long term market forecasting, financial forecasting and valuations and technical engineering solutions. We have developed models for developed and developing markets and for mobile, fixed line, fixed wireless, broadband and Internet. Our models have covered traditional fixed line services as well as advanced data products and services. Financial Reporting Modelling Support As part of a SAP implementation project Coleago developed a model that interfaced with the client’s billing query system in order to automate the process of generating month end accruals for posting to SAP. The process had previously been time consuming and prone to human error. Coleago’s solution was more accurate, more detailed and required much less time.
Advanced Data Product Modelling Coleago developed a suite of tools to support the forecasting of advanced data services for a mobile operator. A product manager Excel template was developed which allowed for the efficient forecasting of a range of advanced services. A consolidation and reporting model then consolidated the results from the individual templates and created extensive reporting as well as the ability to run sensitivities over the submitted forecasts.
Fixed Line Modelling The client, the incumbent fixed network operator in Madagascar, had little visibility over its financial planning, revenues and costs. The company was in urgent need of a budgeting and planning tool that would also allow the company to ascertain the profitability of different products and services. Coleago provided and interactive budgeting and modelling tool based on Excel, The model is menu driven and fully documented. Coleago also populated the model and trained Telma's staff in the use of the model.

Cost Modelling The project consisted of updating a Fully Allocated Historic Cost model, to allow the calculation of the cost of terminating traffic on the Partner network. The original model had been developed by Martin Duckworth of Coleago Consulting in 2000. The main changes made to the model were the inclusion of SMS traffic in the costing and a number of methodological improvements taking into account both the recent developments in regulatory cost accounting in Europe and the availability of cost data with a slightly higher level of granularity. The results of the model are used to inform discussions with the Ministry of Communications over the future level of interconnect pricing with the view to achieving most favourable rates for the mobile operator, which significantly improves profitability.
Broadband Internet Access The client intended to launch a major investment in build a broadband Internet access network in major cities in Japan. The technologies included broadband wireless and fibre. In order to plan the business and funding requirements, the client required a detailed month by month budgeting and longer term quarterly business planning model. Coleago build a bespoke model which included all marketing parameters and departmental opex budgets. The output were profit & loss account, balance sheet, cash flow statement and valuation. The Excel based model also included a detailed executive summary with graphical presentations of key performance indicators.
Budgeting Tool Coleago built a bespoke budgeting and planning tool which provides budget information in monthly intervals for 2 years and a 10 year long term forecast, including a complete set of financial reports (balance sheet, profit & loss account, cash flow statement. Coleago ensured that all relevant data was taken in from a variety of feeds. Profitability is monitored at several levels including gross margin by segment. Operational expenditure is monitored at department level. This means product and department
