ASI 2008 Annual Conference
Denver, the Mile-High City, is in one of the top three high-tech centers in the country. This year’s annual conference will focus on three themes: we have breakout sessions devoted to indexing techniques, running an indexing business, and the future of indexing. Plus, we will be offering a range of preconference workshops that provide in-depth focus on particular aspects of indexing and technology. To kick off our conference, writer-editor-technologist-contrarian Jeff Duntemann will provide an entertaining and thoughtprovoking speech on the difficulties of making print books and ebooks exist in a single publishing industry. Like it or not, our fates as indexers are tied directly to the health of the publishing industry. So as the influence of technology grows, indexers need to keep up to date on the latest news. For example, did you know that anyone can publish a book for Amazon’s Kindle, their ebook reader? That’s right. You don’t even have to go through a publisher. What does that mean for indexers? How does it affect our relationship with authors and publishers? Whatever the answers, we hope that Jeff’s keynote speech, and the many workshops and breakout sessions, will get you thinking about, and help prepare you for what lies ahead. Our conference headquarters is the stunning Warwick Hotel in Denver’s beautiful Uptown neighborhood; it’s within walking distance (or a free bus ride) of the state capitol, the 16th Street Mall, the Denver Art Museum and Michael Graves’s unmatched public library building. Built originally as private apartments, the Warwick has some of the largest hotel rooms in Denver, most with private balconies. The entire hotel is non-smoking. And because the Warwick is a boutique hotel, we are the only conference at that time, meaning that we will have the undivided attention of the hotel’s staff, ensuring that all of us will have a first-class conference experience. I look forward to seeing you in Denver.

New Members/First Time Attendees Orientation
New ASI members and first-time conference attendees are cordially invited to attend an introductory session on Thursday, May 1, 5:30pm–6:30pm, to meet with ASI's officers, board members, and committee chairs and learn about ASI's programs and services. Here you can also team up with a conference Buddy who will help you get the most out of your conference experience. Buddies are assigned based on geographic location and indexing interests. For more information about ASI's buddy program (or to volunteer to be a Buddy), please contact Richard Shrout, Buddy Program Coordinator, at richard.shrout@potomacindexing.com. A Welcome Reception starts our conference on Thursday, May 1. A Networking Luncheon Buffet, is on Friday, May 2. The Awards Dinner is scheduled on Friday evening. The conference dinner, receptions, breakfasts, and luncheons are all included for those who have registered for the full conference. Workshop attendees and oneday registrants may purchase tickets.

Keynote Address: Can the Humble Page Survive the Ebook?
Jeff Duntemann
Thousands of years of evolution have made print books what they are today. Over the next twenty years ebooks will radically change the ways that we find, purchase, read, and study information, and there is no guarantee that a single industry will be able to bridge the gap between print and digital publishing.
Breakout Session C1: Indexes and the Google Generation: What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You
Chuck Knapp
“You know, now that electronic is replacing print, we won’t need indexes anymore, right?” BNA decided to put this to the test. Do indexes, in fact, help in an electronic format, and can we quantify how much? We conducted a usability study at law schools, comparing success rates and completion times for full text search and indexes. Study results and reaction from the national librarian community will be discussed.

Breakout Session B1: Herding Cats: The Challenges of Indexing Multi-authored Documents Using Controlled Vocabulary
Julie McClung
Multi-authored documents present many challenges for indexers. In the case of ongoing publications, the need for consistency in choosing subject headings and terminology is paramount so users can find topics as easily in a 1977 as a 2007 publication. Because multiauthored, ongoing documents are often processed by multiple indexers, a controlled vocabulary and terminology guide greatly assist in this endeavor. Using the B.C. Hansard Index and its in-house resources as a case study, I will demonstrate the challenges and rewards of writing an ongoing index in a teambased environment that reflects the parliamentary debates of the province of British Columbia.

Breakout Session C2: Index Comparison Project, Part 3
Cheryl Landes
This is a continuation of the Index Comparison Project presented at the Vancouver and Toronto conferences. In the latest phase, Cheryl Landes and Cynthia Landeen have conducted usability tests on the indexes from Phase 2 of the project. The results will be presented in this session. Diana Witt (Chair), Caryl Wenzel, Jan Wright, Pilar Wyman, Janet Perlman
We often learn more from mistakes and “disasters” than we do from our successes; criticism should not be feared and may be one of the best ways to develop the self-confidence that is essential to a freelancer’s success. Sharing experiences, both positive and negative, is one of the best ways to learn, and we hope this panel discussion on catastrophe will help both the audience and the participants learn and grow.
