Secondhand smoke, also known as Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS), is a major cause of illness across the United States. Secondhand smoke has been found to contain over 4,000 chemicals, 40 of which are known to cause cancer in humans. Some of the effects of secondhand smoke include: *Heart Disease *Lung Cancer and many other cancers *Respiratory tract infections *Serious respiratory diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD). There is no safe exposure to secondhand smoke for any person of any age, therefore it is very important for individuals to limit their exposure to ETS as much as possible. Ventilation systems in restaurants with both smoking and non-smoking sections have been found to be ineffective in removing secondhand smoke from the air. Smokefree dining is just one great way to reduce your exposure to secondhand smoke!

Pregnancy and Secondhand Smoke
Research studies have found that pregnant women who smoke or are exposed to secondhand smoke have an increased risk of spontaneous abortions, still births, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) after birth. Children and Secondhand Smoke
Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke before or after birth are at a greater risk for developing certain birth defects and childhood illnesses, such as cleft palate and lips, childhood leukemia, Attention Deficit Disorder, infection of the middle ear, bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma. In Ohio, between 1,780 and 3,170 adults, children, and babies die from exposure to secondhand smoke and pregnancy smoke.

The Delaware County Tobacco-Free Tomorrow Coalition is a group of community leaders and residents representing various agencies including the Delaware General Health District, Grady Memorial Hospital, local schools, medical doctors, the Delaware City Police Department, Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and YES officers, Recovery and Prevention Resources, American Cancer Society, Ohio Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Foundation, Ohio Wesleyan University, and others. Coalition membership is open to all Delaware County community members. The coalition collaborates to promote current programming, contributes ideas for educational outreach, organizes a youth tobacco prevention workshop, and provides input on other tobacco initiatives. The coalition meets monthly with members choosing to participate on one of two committees, which meet to formulate strategies on the coalition’s two main goal areas, 1) youth education and prevention, and 2) secondhand smoke education.
