In 2008 the United States made new pledges to the fragile democracy of Liberia. Billion dollar packages of textbooks, health care, and security-force training are in the works. Simultaneously, China has made it own offerings of infrastructure development-office buildings, stadiums, and a highway from Monrovia to Buchanan. This is the same country in which the Firestone Corporation developed its largest rubber plantations, allegedly exploiting child labor and abusing the environment. Today's international investments tell of a keen interest in Liberia's rubber and iron-ore resources that will not dwindle.
