Instead of asking myself what subjects were most likely to appeal to audiences, I persuaded myself that the best thing would be to treat the same subject six times over - in the hope that by the sixth time the audience would come over to me. The first article I ever wrote - even before my work for Cahiers du cinema - was for a journal called Revue du cinma, and it was on the use of color over black and white. Do you think your twenty-first century films, The Lady and the Duke  and The Romance of Astrea and Celadon , will surprise audiences used to your Contes Moraux, not to speak of your Comedies and Proverbs and Tales of the Four Seasons'?
