Strategic stability
Time for a reality check
The term “strategic stability” has its origins during the Cold War, when it
referred to a collection of theories and mathematical calculations designed
to provide insight for defence planners. Unfortunately, the term has since
become a catch-phrase that is typically invoked to refer to a state of affairs
between two or more countries. Defence analysts often refer to the term
without defining it, the assumptions they ascribe to it, or how stability is to
be considered in a specific discussion.
